Pope Leo XIV Begins 2026 with Urgent Call for Global Peace
Pope Leo XIV commenced the year 2026 with a heartfelt plea for peace, directing his message towards nations “bloodied by conflict” and families affected by violence. During a New Year’s Day Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, he emphasized the church’s World Day of Peace, which is celebrated annually on January 1. Following the Mass, the Pope delivered a special prayer from his studio, overlooking a piazza filled with pilgrims and tourists on a bright yet chilly day.
In his prayer, Pope Leo urged collective mindfulness towards achieving peace not only among nations impacted by war but also within families suffering from internal strife. “Let us all pray together for peace: first, among nations bloodied by conflict and suffering, but also within our homes, in families wounded by violence or pain,” he stated, highlighting the urgent need for reconciliation and healing.
The Pope’s message follows his poignant Christmas homily, where he lamented the “rubble and open wounds” left by wars. He specifically called attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, emphasizing the dire conditions faced by its residents. During his Christmas address, he also appealed to both Russia and Ukraine to muster the “courage” to engage in direct talks to resolve their ongoing conflict.
As the busy Christmas season draws to a close, Pope Leo will take a brief respite before celebrating the church’s Epiphany holiday on January 6. This day marks the official conclusion of the 2025 Holy Year, a significant event that attracted millions of pilgrims to Rome throughout the year.
In a notable shift from his predecessor, the Pope plans to convene a two-day meeting of the entire College of Cardinals immediately after the Epiphany celebration. This assembly will include both those who participated in the conclave that elected him and those over age 80 who remain part of the college. Pope Leo XIV is reviving a tradition that had been largely set aside by Pope Francis, aiming to seek counsel on governance matters concerning the approximately 1.4 billion members of the Catholic Church.
The Pope’s actions and statements underscore his commitment to addressing pressing global issues while fostering unity and healing within the church and beyond. As he embarks on his papacy, the world watches to see how he will navigate the challenges ahead and promote a message of peace in a time of turmoil.
