Rep. Landon Bahl Announces Decision Not to Seek Reelection

Rep. Landon Bahl, a Republican representing District 17 in North Dakota, has declared that he will not seek reelection in March 2026. The announcement, made on Sunday, stems from Bahl’s new professional commitments, particularly his role as co-founder of a private equity firm named Alluvium Equity.

Bahl explained that the demands of launching a new business require his full attention. “Any business in its early stages is challenging and demands the utmost attention,” he stated. He emphasized the difficulty of balancing legislative responsibilities with the needs of a startup, particularly given the time commitment associated with serving in the legislature.

Having been first elected to the North Dakota House in 2022, Bahl has served on several key legislative committees, including the Government and Veterans Affairs Committee, the Industry, Business and Labor Committee, and the Judiciary Committee. He reflected on his time as a state lawmaker, noting that his work on the Industry, Business and Labor Committee was particularly meaningful to him as a business owner. “We truly came to work every single day trying to implement new policies and get rid of old policies that hindered business growth,” he remarked.

Bahl also expressed appreciation for his role on the Government and Veterans Affairs Committee, where he learned about the services available to veterans in North Dakota. Hearing veterans’ stories provided him with valuable insights into what the state could do to better support them. One of his proudest legislative achievements was contributing to historic property tax relief passed during last year’s session. “It may not necessarily be what every single homeowner wanted, but it was truly historic property tax relief that the Legislature provided,” he said.

Among his accomplishments, Bahl highlighted the establishment of the North Dakota Center for Aerospace Medicine, a mental health program aimed at supporting pilots at the University of North Dakota and throughout the state. He introduced the bill to create this program in 2025.

As he looks ahead, Bahl remains committed to civic engagement. He expressed interest in potentially running for a local elected office, which would allow him to engage more directly with his community. “I’m really excited to stay actively involved on a local level,” he stated, adding that he would consider running for a role that would enable him to contribute while growing his business.

Until the end of his term, which concludes later this year, Bahl plans to continue participating in interim committees, including the Higher Education Institutions Committee and the Employee Benefits Programs Committee. He remains dedicated to advocating for initiatives such as annual legislative sessions.

In his farewell message, Bahl expressed gratitude to his constituents in District 17, his fellow lawmakers, including Senator Jonathan Sickler and Representative Mark Sanford, as well as state agency employees for their support during his time in office.
