Small Plane Crash in Colombia Claims Lives of 15, Including Lawmaker

A small plane crash in the Norte de Santander department of northeast Colombia on March 6, 2024, resulted in the tragic deaths of all 15 individuals on board, including prominent local lawmaker Diógenes Quintero. The aircraft, operated by the state-owned airline Satena, went down shortly after taking off from Cúcuta, bound for Ocaña, a municipality known for its mountainous terrain.

According to local authorities, the crash site was identified by officials from the community of Curasica, who promptly notified emergency services. A rescue team was dispatched to assess the situation. Unfortunately, the Colombian Ministry of Transportation later confirmed that there were no survivors among the passengers and crew, which included two crew members and 13 passengers.

The plane took off at approximately 11:42 a.m. local time, with a flight duration typically lasting around 40 minutes. Satena reported that the aircraft’s last communication with air traffic control occurred just minutes after takeoff. While the cause of the accident remains unknown, authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident.

Among the deceased was Diógenes Quintero, a notable figure in human rights advocacy, who represented victims of Colombia’s long-standing internal armed conflict. Elected in 2022, Quintero served as one of 16 representatives in the lower chamber created as part of the 2016 peace agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). His party, the U Party, expressed profound sorrow at his passing, highlighting his commitment to serving his community.

Quintero’s team issued a heartfelt statement on social media, mourning the loss of both Quintero and another team member, Natalia Acosta. “Today, life took two of this team’s members: a man who dedicated his life to serving those most in need and someone who filled every space with happiness,” they wrote.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed his condolences in a post on X, stating, “I am deeply sorry for these deaths. My full solidarity to their families, and may they rest in peace.” Vice President Francia Marquez echoed his sentiments, extending her heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this “irreparable loss.”
