South Korea’s Air Premia Launches New 15-Hour Route to the US

South Korea’s Air Premia has announced its upcoming direct route from Seoul Incheon to Washington Dulles, set to commence on April 24, 2025. This new service aims to capture the peak summer travel demand, coinciding with the busiest period for air travel to the United States. In addition to this route, the airline plans to offer charter flights to Las Vegas starting in January 2025.

According to data from Aeroroutes, the Incheon-Dulles route recorded approximately 124,000 round-trip passengers in the twelve months leading to September 2025. When considering all airports in the Washington D.C. area, traffic levels increased to about 154,000 passengers. The introduction of Air Premia to this market means it will directly compete with Korean Air, marking the first time two carriers have operated on this route.

Route Details and Flight Schedule

While not yet available for booking, Air Premia plans to operate four flights per week to Washington Dulles. The inaugural flight is expected to depart from South Korea at 10:05 AM, arriving in D.C. at 10:50 AM the same day, with a total flight time of approximately 13 hours and 45 minutes. The return journey will take longer, at around 15 hours and 25 minutes, due to airspace restrictions that prohibit flying over Russia.

Air Premia operates a fleet of Boeing 787-9 aircraft, which have an average age of 7.4 years. Currently, the airline has eight of these planes, with a ninth expected to join the fleet shortly. Configuration options for the aircraft vary, accommodating between 309 to 344 passengers. This new route will become Air Premia’s longest link to the United States, reflecting its ambitions to expand its international footprint.

Market Competition and Future Expansion

The airline’s foray into the U.S. market began in 2022 with flights to Los Angeles, followed by routes to Newark and San Francisco in 2023. Although Air Premia previously announced plans to launch a service to Seattle, this route has not yet been confirmed. The competitive landscape is expected to intensify with the recent entry of Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines on the Seattle-Seoul route, bringing the total number of carriers in this market to four, including Asiana Airlines and Delta Airlines.

Looking ahead, Air Premia is projected to operate 31 weekly flights to the U.S. by the first week of May 2026. This includes 11 weekly flights to Los Angeles, daily services to Newark, and five weekly flights to San Francisco, along with its new four-weekly service to Washington Dulles. Overall, this expansion will account for approximately 13% of the market share, reflecting significant growth in demand for flights between Korea and the U.S.

Air traffic data indicates that the combined passenger volume from Washington D.C. area airports to Asia reached approximately 1.5 million passengers in the year leading to September 2025. Notably, the Seoul market ranked second among the top Asian markets, with around 154,000 passengers, trailing only Tokyo, which had 185,000.

As Air Premia embarks on this ambitious expansion, the airline will face challenges associated with operating a point-to-point service model, especially on long-haul routes. Future adjustments may be necessary to successfully navigate the competitive environment and ensure profitability.
