Switzerland Seeks UNESCO Recognition for Yodeling Tradition

The Swiss government is advocating for the recognition of yodeling as an intangible cultural heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This decision, expected in December 2023, aims to celebrate a tradition that has evolved from its alpine origins into a popular form of musical expression.

Yodeling has long been associated with the picturesque landscapes of the Swiss Alps, where its distinctive calls could resonate across valleys. While historically linked to male herders, the tradition is experiencing a modern renaissance, drawing greater participation from women and youth. According to professor Nadja Räss of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU), yodeling transcends the four official languages of Switzerland, adding a fifth linguistic dimension through its unique vocal techniques.

Many yodeling clubs have emerged across Switzerland over the past century, reflecting a growing interest in the art form. In total, approximately 12,000 yodelers participate through around 780 groups associated with the Swiss Yodeling Association. These clubs have broadened the appeal of yodeling, incorporating it into various musical genres, from classical to jazz, and even influencing U.S. country music in the late 1920s and 30s.

Yodeling’s history is complex and somewhat elusive. Julien Vuilleumier, a scientific adviser for the Federal Office of Culture, noted that the origins of yodeling are difficult to trace. Some suggest it served as a means of communication across valleys, while others view it as a distinct singing style. “What we know is that yodeling has always been transformed and updated,” Vuilleumier stated.

The Swiss government hopes that UNESCO’s recognition will elevate public awareness of this unique cultural tradition. The UNESCO Intangible Heritage Committee, which meets in New Delhi, will assess this application along with 67 other nominations, including diverse practices from different countries. The intangible heritage list aims to highlight and preserve cultural traditions that are passed down through generations.

Yodeling in Switzerland is characterized by its distinct vocal techniques, which include two primary styles. The first centers on head voice, producing a “u” sound, while the second resonates from the chest, creating an “o” sound. Regional variations further enrich this art form. For example, yodeling from the northern region near Appenzell tends to be more melancholic and slower, whereas styles from central Switzerland are often more intense and brisk.

Räss emphasizes the need to ensure the future of yodeling. She shared that some Swiss primary school teachers are already introducing yodeling into their classrooms, aiming to familiarize children with this cultural practice. “One of my life goals is that when I die, in Switzerland, every school child will be in contact with yodeling during their primary school time,” she remarked, highlighting her commitment to preserving this tradition for future generations.

The outcome of the UNESCO decision will be pivotal for the future of yodeling in Switzerland. As the country awaits the committee’s judgment, the hope is that this recognition will not only honor the rich history of yodeling but also inspire a new generation to embrace and innovate within this cherished cultural practice.
