Takehiro Hira to Accept Trailblazer Award at Tokyo Film Festival
Japanese actor Takehiro Hira will receive The Hollywood Reporter’s prestigious Trailblazer Award at the upcoming 38th Tokyo International Film Festival. This award ceremony will take place during the “American Film Night” celebration at the Roppongi Hills Club on October 28, 2023. Hira is recognized for his significant contributions to the film industry, particularly for his roles in FX’s acclaimed series Shogun and the recently premiered drama Rental Family.
Hira’s recognition marks him as only the second Japanese actor to receive this award, following Tadanobu Asano, who was honored at last year’s festival. The Trailblazer Award is presented to artists whose work expands representation in global entertainment and highlights complex narratives. Previous recipients include notable figures such as Jean Smart, David Oyelowo, and America Ferrera.
Hira gained international acclaim for his role as the ambitious warlord Ishido Kazunari in Shogun, earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. His performance alongside actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai has been praised for its depth and complexity. In Rental Family, directed by Hikari, he stars opposite Brendan Fraser. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and is set for a gala screening in Tokyo.
Hira’s impressive career spans two decades and includes a variety of roles across Japanese, Hollywood, and European projects. He recently completed filming for Lionsgate’s Karoshi, featuring actors Cynthia Erivo, Teo Yoo, and Isabelle May. Additionally, he appeared in Guy Maddin’s Rumours alongside Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival.
The Tokyo International Film Festival is Japan’s largest annual cinema celebration, set to begin in the upscale Ginza district. The award ceremony is expected to attract a wide range of industry professionals from both the U.S. and Japan, showcasing the importance of cultural exchange in film.
On October 29, in collaboration with TIFF, the Motion Picture Association (MPA) will host its annual policy program aimed at enhancing Japan’s production ecosystem. This event will feature guest speakers such as producers Schuyler Weis and Eriko Miyagawa, and will be moderated by Patrick Brzeski, THR’s Asia bureau chief. Following this, Schuyler Weiss will hold a masterclass at TIFFCOM on October 31.
Takehiro Hira’s recognition at the Tokyo International Film Festival underscores his influential role in the entertainment industry and highlights the growing importance of diverse narratives in global cinema.
