Trump Aims for Trade Deal with China During Asia Trip
President Donald Trump is set to arrive in Japan as part of his Asian tour, where he anticipates reaching a trade agreement with China. Trump’s visit follows his participation in a regional summit in Malaysia, where preliminary trade agreements were established with several Southeast Asian nations, including Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
In Japan, Trump will meet with the newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Takaichi, who assumed office just last week, is aiming to cultivate a positive relationship with the U.S. leader to alleviate ongoing trade tensions. This meeting represents a significant diplomatic challenge for Takaichi, the first woman to lead Japan, as she navigates a fragile coalition government.
On the flight to Japan aboard Air Force One, Trump expressed optimism about the U.S.-Japan relationship, highlighting his respect for Takaichi and her connection to former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He stated, “I hear phenomenal things about Takaichi. It’s going to be very good. That really helps Japan and the United States.”
Trump’s focus remains on trade, particularly his expectation of finalizing an agreement with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Officials from both nations have reported that they reached an initial consensus during discussions that will be further elaborated upon in an upcoming high-stakes meeting. Trump emphasized his respect for Xi, saying, “I think we’re going to come away with a deal.”
In addition to trade discussions, Trump indicated he might finalize a deal regarding TikTok during his Asian trip. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed on “Face the Nation” that an agreement initially announced last month is set to be completed during the Trump-Xi meeting.
Following his time in Japan, Trump is scheduled to visit South Korea, where he hopes to engage Xi once again on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. The potential for a meeting with reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong Un remains on the table, as Trump stated he would be willing to extend his trip if an opportunity arises.
Despite his diplomatic endeavors, Trump has faced criticism regarding his unilateral power to impose tariffs, which he has frequently used to push for more favorable trade terms. As he awaits a Supreme Court decision that could clarify his authority, the international community watches closely.
Trump’s recent activities also included attending the annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, where he facilitated a ceremonial signing of an expanded ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. His influence in the region was evident, as he pressured both countries to reach an agreement by threatening to withhold trade deals.
On a different note, Trump praised Argentine President Javier Milei, stating that Milei’s party exceeded expectations in recent midterm elections. He indicated that this affirmation supports Milei’s policies aimed at addressing Argentina’s longstanding economic issues. The Trump administration previously provided a $20 billion credit swap line to assist Milei ahead of the elections and is considering further financial support.
As Trump continues his tour, trade negotiations remain a priority. His administration’s approach reflects a broader strategy of realigning international economic relations under the “America First” agenda, which prominently features tariffs as a tool to boost domestic manufacturing and secure advantageous trade agreements. The outcome of these discussions could have lasting implications for U.S. relations with both Japan and China, as well as the wider Asia-Pacific region.
