Trump Claims Progress in Ukraine Talks During Meeting with Zelenskyy
President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at his Mar-a-Lago estate on Sunday, portraying himself as a key figure in ongoing peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. This meeting, which included a high-profile lunch, occurred against the backdrop of persistent fighting in Ukraine, with no formal cease-fire established.
Trump emphasized his close relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a press conference, describing a recent phone call with him as “very productive.” He characterized Putin as “very serious” about achieving peace, indicating that the Russian leader might be amenable to negotiations. Trump suggested that he could address Ukraine’s parliament directly if Zelenskyy deemed it necessary, signaling his desire to deepen his involvement in the peace process.
During the meeting, Trump claimed, “We’re 95% there,” as he summarized progress toward a tentative 20-point peace framework. Both leaders agreed that senior officials from their respective teams, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, would continue discussions. Zelenskyy, however, did not disclose the names of Ukraine’s representatives for these future meetings.
While Trump projected optimism, military operations in Ukraine remained ongoing. On Saturday, Ukrainian authorities reported drone and missile strikes on Kyiv and surrounding regions, causing casualties, widespread power outages, and damage to infrastructure. These attacks underscored the disconnect between diplomatic discussions and the harsh realities on the ground, revealing that a cease-fire or a concrete halt to hostilities was still far from being achieved.
Zelenskyy maintained a measured tone during the press conference, often allowing Trump to elaborate on his views. Trump occasionally diverted the conversation to his own political grievances, including references to the 2020 election and the subsequent Russia investigation, positioning himself as a significant player in both past and present global matters.
He also mentioned that his team had coordinated efforts with European leaders to facilitate the peace talks, presenting himself as an essential mediator between Kyiv and Moscow. When questioned about the potential for a cease-fire, Trump deferred to Putin’s judgment, suggesting that any cessation of hostilities would emerge from Russian decisions rather than direct negotiations with Ukraine.
Analysts pointed out that while Trump’s “95%” claim and the proposed 20-point framework appeared promising, the absence of a formal cease-fire and ongoing Russian attacks raised significant doubts about the actual proximity of an agreement. The dynamics of the press conference, with Trump as the vocal mediator and Zelenskyy as a largely quiet participant, reinforced the impression that Trump was eager to claim credit for any potential progress, despite uncertain outcomes.
As both teams prepare for follow-on negotiations, the path to peace remains tenuous, shaped significantly by the ongoing violence and geopolitical realities that continue to evolve.
