Trump’s Immigration Policies Result in Decline of U.S. Growth Rate
The U.S. population reached nearly 342 million people in 2025, but this growth has slowed significantly due to President Donald Trump‘s immigration policies. According to estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau, the nation’s growth rate dropped to 0.5%, a stark decrease from 1% in 2024, which marked the highest growth in two decades, largely driven by immigration.
In 2024, the U.S. population was approximately 340 million, with immigration contributing nearly 1.3 million new residents. However, this influx diminished in 2025, with the Census Bureau projecting that the net gain from immigration could fall to just 321,000 by mid-2026. These estimates do not differentiate between legal and illegal immigration, revealing a broader trend regarding the impact of immigration on population growth.
The 2025 figures represent a significant shift from previous years. The nation experienced its lowest growth rate in recent history during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, with an increase of only 522,000 people, driven by travel restrictions. The last comparable rate occurred in 1919 during the Spanish flu pandemic, when the growth rate also fell below 0.5%.
The decline in immigration has affected various states, particularly those that have historically attracted large immigrant populations. California experienced a net population loss of 9,500 residents in 2025, a dramatic reversal from the previous year’s gain of 232,000. The drop in net immigrants to California was notable, falling from 361,000 in 2024 to 109,000 in 2025.
Florida also faced challenges, with substantial decreases in both immigration and domestic migration. The state’s net number of immigrants fell from more than 411,000 in 2024 to 178,000 in 2025. Domestic migration into Florida dropped significantly, with only 22,000 people relocating to the state, down from 64,000 the previous year.
New York’s growth was minimal, adding just 1,008 residents, largely due to a decline in net migration from immigrants, which decreased from 207,000 to 95,600. On the other hand, states like South Carolina, Idaho, and North Carolina recorded the highest growth rates, ranging from 1.3% to 1.5%.
The recent data has prompted researchers to analyze the effects of Trump’s immigration policies since he returned to the White House in January 2025. His administration has prioritized immigration enforcement, making it a central issue of his campaign in 2024. The Census Bureau’s estimates reflect changes from July 2024 to July 2025, which encompass the latter part of President Joe Biden‘s administration and the early months of Trump’s second term.
These figures highlight a notable decline from 2024, when net international migration accounted for 84% of the nation’s increase of 3.3 million people. The surge in immigration two years ago was partly attributed to a new counting methodology that included humanitarian admissions.
According to Eric Jensen, a senior research scientist at the Census Bureau, the latest estimates indicate a trend of increasing out-migration alongside declining immigration numbers.
Population estimates differ from the decennial census, which allocates congressional seats and determines government funding distribution. These estimates are derived from government records and internal Census Bureau data. The release of the 2025 population estimates faced delays due to a federal government shutdown last fall and comes during a challenging period for the Census Bureau, which has seen a 15% reduction in its workforce due to cost-cutting measures.
Concerns have been raised regarding potential political influence on statistical agencies following recent actions by the Trump administration. Nevertheless, William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, noted that Census Bureau staff have continued their work with minimal interference.
The latest population data underscores the significant impact of immigration policies on the U.S. demographic landscape and raises questions about future growth trends as the nation navigates these changes.
