Two Federal Agents Fire Weapons in Fatal Minneapolis Shooting

Two federal agents discharged their firearms during the fatal incident involving 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. This information was provided to Congress by an official from Customs and Border Protection (CBP), as reported by The Associated Press on January 9, 2024. Preliminary investigations by CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility indicated that the officers attempted to take Pretti into custody, which resulted in a struggle.

According to the CBP official, during the confrontation, an officer shouted, “He’s got a gun!” multiple times. Both a Border Patrol agent and a Customs and Border Protection officer responded by firing their weapons. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) disclosed that Pretti approached CBP agents while armed with a 9mm semiautomatic handgun and two magazines. However, it remains unclear whether he brandished the weapon at any point during the encounter.

The DHS stated, “The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted,” leading an agent to fire in what they described as defensive shots. Despite receiving immediate medical aid, Pretti was pronounced dead at the scene.

Governor Tim Walz criticized the DHS for sharing information and images on social media without completing a thorough investigation. He labeled the release of details related to the incident as “nonsense” and “lies,” arguing they were not relevant to the circumstances of the shooting.

Reports from CNN reveal that Pretti had previously encountered federal agents, suffering a broken rib during an incident a week prior to the shooting. This confrontation arose when he allegedly intervened as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents pursued individuals on foot. A source, speaking anonymously for fear of retribution, recounted that Pretti shouted at the agents and attempted to assist the individuals they were pursuing.

In that earlier incident, CNN’s source indicated that five agents tackled Pretti, resulting in his injury. The agents subsequently released him at the scene.

Protests have emerged in the Twin Cities following the death of another individual, Renee Nicole Good, who was fatally shot by an ICE officer on January 7, 2024. The agent involved, identified as Jonathan Ross, fired his weapon after Good allegedly attempted to ram her vehicle into him and other officers. Reports indicate that Ross suffered internal bleeding due to the collision.

The situation surrounding these incidents has intensified local tensions, prompting public demonstrations and discussions about the use of force by federal agents. As investigations continue, the focus remains on accountability and the implications of these confrontations on community relations.
