U.S. Space Force Prepares for 2026 with Enhanced Readiness Strategies

As the U.S. Space Force enters 2026, it faces a critical juncture in its mission to secure space superiority amid rising threats from both China and Russia. The service is transitioning to a full-spectrum warfighting approach, as highlighted in the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission’s 2025 annual report. The report emphasizes that “China is aggressively positioning itself as a global leader in space technology and exploration,” aiming to reshape international governance and challenge U.S. dominance in space.

By mid-2025, China had developed an operational satellite fleet exceeding 1,060, with hundreds dedicated to intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. In response, Chief of Space Operations Gen. B. Chance Saltzman articulated U.S. intentions during the Air & Space Forces Association’s Warfare Symposium in March 2025, stating, “The Space Force will do whatever it takes to achieve space superiority.”

Strategic Shifts and New Initiatives

The release of “Space Warfighting: A Framework for Planners” in April 2025 marked a significant shift for the Space Force. This document codifies the transition from supportive roles to treating space as a contested domain, underscoring the importance of offensive and defensive counter-space operations. In the foreword, Saltzman asserts that space superiority “unlocks superiority in other domains” and is vital for projecting power and deterring aggression.

The current U.S. military space capabilities, while foundational, are becoming increasingly vulnerable to various threats. Systems such as the Space-Based Infrared System and the Next-Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared satellites provide critical detection of ballistic and hypersonic launches globally. However, they face risks from signal jamming, directed-energy weapons, and cyberattacks. U.S. officials report that these reversible threats occur daily and could significantly impact joint operations during wartime.

This landscape has prompted the Space Force to initiate the “Race to Resilience” initiative, aiming for battle-ready architectures by 2026. Key milestones in the upcoming year include the development of boost-phase space-based interceptor prototypes, part of the Golden Dome missile defense initiative, which aims to neutralize enemy missiles in their initial flight phase. Contracts for this initiative were awarded in November 2025, with kinetic midcourse interceptors expected to be awarded by February 2026.

Enhancing Operational Readiness

In addition to these advancements, the Space Force is finalizing requirements for the Space Warfighter Operational Readiness Domain, a digital training environment that will enhance operational readiness through virtual simulations of contested operations. Four on-orbit servicing demonstrations are also planned for 2026, focusing on satellite refueling, repair, and maneuvering. These capabilities are crucial for extending the lifespan of space assets and ensuring operational flexibility.

The transition of the Commercial Augmentation Space Reserve from pilot phase to full-scale operations is another strategic move, with a goal to establish 20 contracts by the end of 2026. This initiative will enhance access to commercial satellite communications networks during wartime, reflecting a growing emphasis on hybrid military-commercial architectures.

With fiscal 2026 funding approaching $40 billion, the U.S. Space Force is positioned to strengthen its resilience and ensure space superiority in the face of escalating threats. As China continues its rapid satellite expansion and Russia demonstrates disruptive capabilities, 2026 stands as a pivotal year for the Space Force to solidify its role in maintaining U.S. dominance in space operations.
