U.S. Urges China to Halt Military Drills Near Taiwan

Tensions in the Taiwan Strait have escalated following recent military exercises conducted by China, which the U.S. has described as “unnecessary” provocations. The U.S. State Department criticized Beijing’s actions and called for an immediate cessation of military pressure on Taiwan.

Tommy Pigott, principal deputy spokesperson for the State Department, stated on August 10, 2023, that “China’s military activities and rhetoric toward Taiwan and others in the region increase tensions unnecessarily.” He emphasized the need for Beijing to exercise restraint and engage in “meaningful dialogue.”

The U.S. has a long-standing commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, opposing any unilateral changes to the status quo through force or coercion. This commitment comes amid China’s claims that Taiwan is part of its territory, with ongoing threats to use force for its annexation.

In a series of military maneuvers conducted on August 7 and 8, 2023, China launched missiles and deployed numerous fighter jets, navy ships, and coastguard vessels around Taiwan. These drills, labelled “Justice Mission 2025,” simulated a blockade of key Taiwanese ports, further heightening regional tensions. The Taiwanese government condemned these exercises as “highly provocative.”

Despite the rising tensions, President Donald Trump downplayed the significance of the drills. During a press briefing, he stated, “I have a great relationship with President Xi. And he hasn’t told me anything about it. I certainly have seen it.” Trump expressed confidence that an invasion by China was not imminent, noting, “They’ve been doing naval exercises for 20 years in that area.”

The backdrop to these military activities includes the recent approval of an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan by the Trump administration, a move that has further strained U.S.-China relations. Since 2022, China has conducted six significant rounds of military exercises, particularly following the controversial visit to Taiwan by then-U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

As the situation develops, the U.S. continues to advocate for dialogue and peaceful resolution, while monitoring China’s military actions closely. The international community remains watchful, aware that these events could have wider implications for regional stability and security.
