UN Expert Calls for Action on Bushra Khan’s Detention Conditions

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture, Alice Jill Edwards, has expressed serious concerns regarding the detention conditions of Bushra Bibi Khan, the wife of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. Edwards urged Pakistani authorities to take immediate action to enhance her living conditions in accordance with international human rights standards.

In light of these concerns, Edwards called upon the Pakistani government to improve her conditions and allow communication with her lawyers and family members. She reminded officials of their obligation under international law to safeguard the health of detainees and adhere to the legal protections outlined in human rights agreements. The UN mandates that any form of detention must respect the inherent dignity of individuals and prohibits torture or cruel treatment.

The United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, also known as the Mandela Rules, stipulate that prison accommodations must meet health standards while considering factors such as lighting, heating, and ventilation. Furthermore, these rules ensure that prisoners have the right to maintain family connections and receive legal assistance.

Bushra Bibi Khan is currently imprisoned following multiple criminal convictions, alongside her husband, Imran Khan. The most recent ruling occurred on December 22, 2023, when a Pakistani court sentenced them both to 17 years for the illegal sale of state gifts. Earlier in January 2024, Bushra Khan received a seven-year sentence in connection with the Al-Qadir corruption case.

Since Imran Khan’s removal from office in April 2022, both he and his wife have faced a series of criminal charges, which they assert are politically motivated.
