Yoon Suk Yeol Faces Martial Law Allegations Amid Political Crisis

Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is currently facing serious accusations related to a planned declaration of martial law, as revealed by special investigators on Monday. According to Cho Eun Suk, the special prosecutor leading the investigation, Yoon allegedly orchestrated a scheme to provoke a military response from North Korea to justify imposing emergency rule within the country.

The controversy traces back to the evening of December 3, 2024, when Yoon unexpectedly announced martial law, a decision that plunged South Korea into a significant political crisis. The declaration followed a contentious dispute over the national budget. At the time, Yoon, a member of the conservative party, claimed the drastic measure was necessary to safeguard South Korea from opposition forces he accused of undermining the state, alleging infiltration by the Communist Party of China. Notably, no evidence was provided to substantiate these claims.

Investigators, led by Cho, contend that Yoon had been formulating a plan to impose martial law since at least October 2023. The allegations include assertions that Yoon and his then-defence minister directed a covert drone operation into North Korean territory with the intention of provoking a military retaliation. Despite these efforts, Pyongyang did not respond militarily, undermining the rationale for Yoon’s emergency measures.

Yoon now stands trial facing multiple charges, including insurrection, which is classified as a severe offence under South Korean law and can carry the death penalty. His legal troubles come against the backdrop of a shifting political landscape in South Korea, where since June, President Lee Jae Myung, a centre-left politician and long-time rival of Yoon, has taken office.
