Glendale Physician Charged with $45 Million Medicare Fraud Scheme
A physician from Glendale, California, faces serious allegations of defrauding Medicare by submitting fraudulent claims for Botox treatments. According to the U.S. Justice Department, Dr. Violetta Mailyan has been indicted for filing over $45 million in claims for procedures that were either unnecessary or never performed.
The federal grand jury’s indictment, announced on March 14, 2024, outlines a scheme where Mailyan allegedly falsified medical records to support her claims. Prosecutors assert that some of the Botox injections were billed on dates when Mailyan was traveling internationally or when the patients were not present in the United States. In particular, claims were submitted for one individual while they were incarcerated in a federal prison.
Mailyan has marketed herself as a “facial aesthetic doctor” and a board-certified physician specializing in beauty, often highlighted through her social media presence. The charges against her include nine counts of wire fraud and three counts of obstructing a criminal investigation related to health care offenses. If convicted, she could face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for each wire fraud count, and five years for each obstruction count.
The case underscores growing concerns regarding fraudulent activities in the healthcare sector, particularly related to cosmetic procedures that are often pursued for aesthetic reasons rather than medical necessity. The U.S. Justice Department is intensifying efforts to combat healthcare fraud, which costs taxpayers billions of dollars annually.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Dr. Mailyan will have the opportunity to respond to the charges in court. The scrutiny surrounding her case may prompt further investigations into practices within the aesthetic medicine field.
The public can stay informed about developments in this case as it progresses through the judicial system. The focus on health care fraud remains a priority, with authorities committed to protecting the integrity of Medicare and similar programs.
