Discover the World’s Largest Air Force Bases by Runway Length
Determining the world’s largest military air force bases by runway length involves more complexity than one might expect. Many airports serve dual purposes, accommodating both military and civilian flights, and various types of runways exist, including ice runways in Antarctica and dry lakebed runways in California. This article highlights the longest military runways while also acknowledging significant dual-use runways.
The United States holds a dominant position on this list, primarily due to its unique requirements for space missions and strategic transport operations. In contrast, Russia, inheriting its runway infrastructure from the Soviet Union, has limited dedicated long military runways. The longest dedicated military runways in Russia, located at Ukrainka and Engels, measure approximately 11,500 feet (3,505 meters).
6. Ben Guerir Air Base, Morocco
Ben Guerir Air Base ranks sixth with a runway length of 13,720 feet (4,182 meters). Situated in Morocco’s Marraksh-Safi region, near Marrakech, this base was originally a United States Air Force installation. Its runway (18/36) includes an additional 1,000 feet of underrun and 2,500 feet of compacted dirt overrun, allowing for a usable length of approximately 15,720 feet in extreme conditions.
Established in 1951 during the early Cold War, Ben Guerir served as a forward base for U.S. operations. The base transitioned to a key facility for the Royal Moroccan Air Force after the U.S. withdrawal in 1963. It has hosted multiple F-16 Fighting Falcon squadrons and is under consideration to potentially support F-35 operations as Morocco pursues a purchase of the stealth fighter.
5. Eielson Air Force Base, USA
Located near Fairbanks, Alaska, Eielson Air Force Base boasts a runway of 14,530 feet (4,429 meters). This runway supports Arctic training exercises, including the renowned Red Flag operations featuring various fighter jets from the U.S. Air Force and allied nations. The extended runway accommodates heavy fuel loads necessary for operations in extreme winter conditions.
Originally lengthened in the late 1940s to support heavy bombers, Eielson has hosted a range of aircraft, from B-29 Superfortresses to B-36 Peacemakers. Today, it is home to the 354th Fighter Wing, which operates as part of the Eleventh Air Force.
4. Vandenberg Space Force Base, USA
Vandenberg Space Force Base, with a runway measuring 15,000 feet (4,572 meters), is primarily utilized for space launches. Its runway (Runway 12/30) previously served as an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle. This base, established in 1941, transitioned from a U.S. Air Force base to a Space Force base in 2021.
The runway’s length enhances operational flexibility for military aircraft and supports a variety of large defense airframes, including the C-5 and C-17. Vandenberg is notable for its collaboration with NASA and SpaceX for various civil and commercial space launches.
3. Edwards Air Force Base, USA
Edwards Air Force Base features a notable runway of 15,024 feet (4,579 meters) and is recognized for its extensive testing capabilities. This runway, designated as 05R/23L, is possibly the longest military-only paved runway globally and is crucial for experimental operations.
The base, home to the 412th Test Wing, has a storied history, including significant events such as Chuck Yeager’s sound barrier-breaking flight and the first landings of the Space Shuttle. Edwards Air Force Base encompasses a total of 39,060 feet (11,905 meters) when considering the adjacent Rogers Dry Lakebed, which serves as a testing ground for various aircraft.
2. Shigatse Peace Airport, China
Shigatse Peace Airport in Tibet, China, features one of the longest runways at 16,404 feet (5,000 meters). This site serves as a dual-use airport and is strategically significant for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). Due to the thin air at high altitudes, longer runways are essential for optimal aircraft performance.
Although this list primarily focuses on military runways, Shigatse is a remarkable example of how altitude influences runway design. The shorter Qamdo Bamda Airport previously claimed to have the world’s longest paved runway, but recent reconstructions have adjusted its length to approximately 14,764 feet.
1. Edwards Air Force Base, USA
At the top of the list, Edwards Air Force Base’s Rogers Dry Lakebed extends over 39,060 feet (11,905 meters), making it the longest usable surface in military aviation. The primary paved runway, known as Runway 04R/22L, is 15,024 feet long and connects to the lakebed, allowing for extensive testing operations.
Edwards is recognized not only for its size but also for its role in testing experimental aircraft and hosting significant aviation milestones. The base’s extensive facilities and runways, totaling 13 in various configurations, highlight its importance in military aviation history.
This exploration of the world’s longest military air force bases by runway length underscores the strategic importance of these facilities in global defense operations. Their unique designs cater to diverse needs, from arctic training to space missions, reflecting the evolving landscape of military aviation.
