Allegations of bullying and racism against prominent political figure Nigel Farage have resurfaced, as former teacher Chloë Deakin speaks out about her experiences with him during his time at Dulwich College in southeast London. Deakin, who taught English at the school in the early 1980s, claims that Farage displayed troubling behavior towards fellow pupils, including acts of harassment and a fascination with far-right ideologies.

In a recent interview, Deakin recounted a specific incident from 1981, when Farage was 17 years old and already drawing attention for his controversial behavior. During a class discussion focused on bullying, Deakin heard students refer to Farage as a bully. Shocked by the accusations, she sought confirmation from colleagues, who corroborated the claims of harassment and noted Farage’s apparent interest in extremist views.

Allegations of Bullying and Racism

Deakin described a meeting among staff members regarding the selection of prefects, where strong concerns were raised about Farage’s suitability for the role. Despite the apprehensions voiced by Deakin and her colleagues, the headteacher, David Emms, and deputy headteacher, Terry Walsh, ultimately included Farage on the list of prefects. Deakin expressed her dismay, stating, “I was appalled and that was why I wrote independently to Emms,” emphasizing her commitment to addressing what she viewed as unacceptable behavior.

In her letter to Emms, which surfaced during a report by journalist Michael Crick in 2013, Deakin detailed specific incidents involving Farage. She noted that colleagues had described his racist and neo-fascist views, including an incident where he allegedly sang Hitler Youth songs at a cadet camp. Deakin highlighted the seriousness of the matter, emphasizing the collective responsibility of educators to guide future leaders toward enlightenment and compassion.

Recent reports by The Guardian have revealed further allegations from over 30 of Farage’s former classmates, who detailed experiences of being bullied or witnessing acts of racism and anti-Semitism during their school years. Farage’s behavior is said to have persisted from ages 13 to 18, raising significant concerns about the impact of his actions on his peers.
