Discovering Jewish Heritage and Cultural Richness in South Africa

A recent visit to South Africa revealed the rich tapestry of Jewish culture and history in a country that has seen significant transformation over the years. Upon entering the library, I was warmly welcomed by Janine Scher, the library’s cataloguer, who expressed enthusiasm about sharing the stories of Jewish life in this vibrant nation. She shared that Jewish presence in South Africa commenced in August 1807, when ship surgeon Siegfried Fraenkel became the first openly identified Jew to settle here. Today, the Jewish community numbers around 50,000, contributing significantly to the cultural, social, political, and economic fabric of South Africa.

Historically, Jewish South Africans have played notable roles, particularly during the anti-apartheid movement in the 1970s and 1980s. Figures like Helen Suzman and Joe Slovo were pivotal in advocating for change during a tumultuous period in the country’s history.
