ICE Detains Airport Workers in Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport Operation

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have detained over a dozen workers at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) as part of a targeted operation aimed at enhancing immigration oversight. The detentions, which reportedly began on March 4, 2024, involve airport employees arriving for their shifts or already on the job, according to the local union representing many of those affected.

Unite Here Local 17, which represents over 6,000 workers in the Minneapolis area, stated that several of its members, primarily employed in hospitality roles, were apprehended shortly after passing through Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checks. Wade Luneburg, the union’s political director, confirmed that many workers were detained immediately after clearing security, while others were taken from their positions in various airport restaurants and retail outlets.

Increased ICE Presence at MSP Airport

The operation at MSP is part of a broader initiative by ICE, which has been ramping up enforcement activities in the Minneapolis area, known for its recent civil unrest. Agents are now positioned throughout the airport, including on jet bridges and in terminal areas, conducting document checks for both passengers and airport employees. This marks a significant increase in ICE’s presence at the airport, which serves more than 37 million passengers annually.

According to reports from CBS News, the union has expressed concerns about the legality and ethics of these detentions, noting that many workers had already undergone background checks and possessed valid work authorizations. Luneburg highlighted specific cases where individuals were detained after completing their shifts, stating, “They came through the TSA line and then were quickly detained by ICE or Border Patrol.” This situation has raised alarms among employees and advocates regarding the potential for wrongful detentions.

In response to these activities, MSP employees have leaked internal communications indicating that ICE’s operations will extend beyond typical enforcement protocols. The agency’s enhanced oversight includes waiting on jet bridges and inside terminals, which has led to fears of indiscriminate document checks. Although U.S. citizens are not legally required to show identification to ICE agents, they have been advised to cooperate to avoid potential misunderstandings that could lead to detention.

Public Reactions and Legal Concerns

The recent actions by ICE have sparked significant public outcry, particularly in Minneapolis. Critics argue that these practices violate the Fourth Amendment, which protects individuals from unwarranted searches and seizures. Protests have taken place around the airport, reflecting widespread anxiety over immigration enforcement in public spaces.

The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), which operates MSP, has stated that its Airport Police Department does not receive prior notification of ICE operations and does not coordinate with federal agents. Nevertheless, MAC clarified that federal agents have broad access to airport facilities, raising questions about the impact of these operations on daily airport activities.

Additionally, MSP has seen an uptick in deportation flights, which have reportedly increased from one or two weekly to about two daily. This surge coincides with the heightened enforcement presence, further compounding community tensions and fears of increased deportations.
