Trust in AI for Healthcare Declines, Study Reveals 50-Point Gap

According to a recent study by Reach3 Insights and Rival Technologies, trust in artificial intelligence (AI) within the healthcare sector has significantly declined. The research indicates that only 44% of Americans express trust in AI’s application in healthcare, a drop from 52% in 2024. This finding emerges from the initial wave of the 2026 Digital Health Trends study, which investigates changing attitudes towards digital health technologies.

The study reveals a stark contrast between those who actively use AI in healthcare and those who do not. Among users, a remarkable 88% report confidence in AI’s capabilities, whereas only 38% of non-users share the same sentiment. The data illustrates a substantial 50-point trust divide between these groups, highlighting the influence of familiarity on confidence levels.

Key Findings on AI Trust Levels

The findings illustrate three primary insights into consumer attitudes towards AI in healthcare. First, the overall trust remains low, with 53% of respondents expressing negative feelings about the integration of AI into medical practices. This indicates a significant gap in acceptance, as a majority of the population remains skeptical.

Second, hands-on experience with AI markedly enhances trust. The 14% of respondents currently using AI for health or wellness express overwhelming support, with 87% feeling positively about its role in healthcare. In contrast, non-users show significantly less enthusiasm, with only 41% reporting a positive outlook.

Lastly, while 29% of Americans show interest in utilizing AI for health-related purposes in the future, 38% are uninterested, and 33% remain undecided. This uncertainty indicates a considerable challenge for the healthcare industry as it seeks to integrate AI solutions effectively.

Consumers reported greater comfort using AI for tasks such as obtaining health information and handling administrative duties rather than making medical decisions. Current users frequently cite specific functions, including answering health inquiries, simplifying medical jargon, and determining whether symptoms require further care.

Despite the advantages, several concerns impede broader acceptance of AI in healthcare. Issues related to accuracy, data privacy, and the need for human-centered care remain prevalent.
