Purdue Research Projects Halted Amid Allegations of Misconduct

Multiple research projects at Purdue University have been suspended due to serious allegations of misconduct, including the falsification of laboratory documents. Internal complaints filed in late 2025 pointed to significant violations in animal research protocols, raising concerns about the integrity of scientific practices at the institution.

The complaints, which were directed to Purdue’s Office of Research, outlined several troubling incidents. These included not maintaining an aseptic environment, failing to provide proper personal protective equipment, using unapproved drugs on laboratory animals, and altering lab documents. The animal rights organization Stop Animal Exploitation Now provided letters to the National Institute of Health (NIH) detailing these allegations through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Michael Budkie, executive director of SAEN, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “They were not following protocol… and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee requires that the protocol is followed to the letter.” He added that the credibility of the affected research had been irreparably damaged, asserting, “Whatever chance these projects may have had to provide some kind of useful scientific information is gone.”

In October 2025, the experiment titled “Examination of behavioral and neural outcomes associated with drugs of abuse and neurodegenerative diseases” was suspended. The suspension was due to failures in using personal protective equipment properly, maintaining a sterile lab environment, and ensuring that catheters remained properly sutured. Following a review, this protocol was reinstated later that year, as confirmed by Trevor Peters, a university spokesperson. He stated that no procedures were conducted outside of approved guidelines and that the matter was resolved quickly.

Despite the reinstatement, another project, “High-throughput deep tissue in vivo imaging,” faced more severe repercussions. In December 2025, this experiment was permanently suspended after a unanimous vote by the IACUC. Allegations included improper housing of laboratory mice, failure to euthanize a mouse with a non-healing wound despite veterinary instructions, and the unauthorized use of over-the-counter drugs on animals.

According to the reports, one lab member received a permanent suspension due to their handling of a wounded mouse. This individual reportedly moved the animal from the housing area to the laboratory, treating its wound without consulting a veterinarian. The use of surgical glue on the unclosed wound likely caused significant pain to the animal, further violating ethical standards.

The letter to the NIH highlighted that logs related to the health of the animals involved appeared to be falsified. Discrepancies in dates and access times raised serious questions about when animals were actually treated by staff. Budkie noted that SAEN receives around 1,000 lab complaints each year, with a small percentage—between 50 and 100—warranting suspension, and fewer than 10 involving falsified documents.

The investigation into these incidents is significant, as the university’s accreditation status with the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care could be at risk due to the documented misconduct. Purdue’s adherence to ethical guidelines is under scrutiny, with potential long-term consequences for those found guilty of research misconduct. Budkie warned that individuals identified in the falsification of documents could face severe penalties from the Federal Office of Research Integrity, including temporary or permanent bans from federally funded research.

Peters reiterated Purdue’s commitment to responsible research practices, stating, “Purdue remains fully committed to maintaining complete compliance with all animal care and use regulations and to sustaining transparent, proactive communication with institutional oversight committees.” Following the incidents, remaining staff members will undergo retraining on IACUC policies to ensure compliance.

As these issues unfold, the implications for Purdue University could extend beyond immediate suspensions, affecting the institution’s reputation and its ability to secure future research funding. While the university seeks to address these allegations, the spotlight on its animal research practices continues to raise critical questions about ethical standards in scientific inquiry.
