The Vancouver Canucks have introduced a new Diwali-themed jersey, allowing fans to celebrate the festival while showcasing their team pride. Designed by local artist Suki Kaur, the jersey features a flame, a peacock, the night sky, and intricate phulkari patterns. This initiative marks the fifth consecutive year that the team has released merchandise in honor of Diwali.

Kaur, based in Surrey, emphasized the significance of phulkari in Punjabi culture but aimed for a design that resonates with a broader audience. “The phulkari is special to me, because it’s such an integral part of Punjabi fashion, but I didn’t want it to speak just to Punjabis, because Diwali is not just about Punjabi people,” Kaur explained. “You see variations in every culture.”

Fans have expressed enthusiasm about the new merchandise. Arjan Attwal, a Canucks supporter, stated, “I’m going to the Diwali game, so it’s gonna be cool to see it in person.” The team is set to host Diwali Night on November 1, 2023, in Abbotsford and again on November 5, 2023, at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

While the jersey is priced at $750, there are more affordable options available, including hats, hoodies, and pucks featuring the new design. Yet, some fans voiced concerns about the jersey’s cost. Austin Taylor remarked, “It’s a nice design, I mean, for the price it’s terrible. $750 for a jersey is kind of crippling. A jersey of that price better come with front row seats and a dinner if you’re gonna pay that much.”

The Canucks’ commitment to celebrating cultural diversity through their merchandise has garnered attention and appreciation. As the team continues to release special items for various occasions, fans are hopeful for even more options in the future, reflecting the rich tapestry of cultures celebrated in their community.
