NYPD Officers Save Choking Baby in Urgent Rescue Mission
URGENT UPDATE: A heroic rescue by two NYPD officers in Corona, Queens has saved the life of a 10-month-old baby who was choking. The dramatic incident unfolded earlier this month when baby Makai, the son of first-time parents Asia Rodriguez and Brandon Laboy, suddenly stopped breathing during a nap.
Rodriguez, monitoring her baby via a baby monitor, witnessed the shocking moment when Makai began to choke after throwing up. Acting swiftly, she called 911, desperately hoping for help. “He’s my life, and I’m going to make sure every second counts,” she stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Two officers from the 115 Precinct arrived on the scene within minutes. Body-worn camera footage reveals the intense moments as one officer swiftly took Makai into his arms. The officer expertly patted the baby’s back, successfully dislodging the obstruction that was blocking his airway.
The parents were overwhelmed when they later viewed the bodycam video, realizing how close they came to a tragic outcome. “It’s just incredible with the right training and what they’re doing, they saved his life,” Laboy said. “You can’t understate how good the training that they had is.”
Rodriguez expressed her gratitude, stating, “If I could see them, I would hug them. God bless them.” Both of the officers, rookies with less than two years on the job, demonstrated the critical importance of their training, which includes certification in first aid and CPR.
This incident highlights the invaluable role of police officers in emergency situations, especially when lives are at stake. As Rodriguez and Laboy reflect on the ordeal, they are deeply thankful for the rapid response and professionalism displayed by the NYPD. “My son’s here because of them,” Rodriguez added, emphasizing the emotional weight of the rescue.
Parents and community members in Queens are rallying behind the officers, praising their quick actions that made all the difference. This event serves as a powerful reminder of the impact first responders can have in life-threatening situations.
As the family continues to celebrate Makai’s recovery, the NYPD officers involved in the rescue will undoubtedly carry this experience throughout their careers, knowing they played a pivotal role in saving a life.
