Clarkston Welcomes 72 Affordable Apartments at Holy Family Haven
A new chapter in affordable housing has begun in Clarkston with the opening of the Holy Family Haven, a complex featuring 72 affordable apartments. This initiative, developed by Catholic Charities Housing, has already seen half of its units occupied, with more families preparing to move in.
The grand opening ceremony, held at 1411 Port Drive, was a celebration infused with community spirit. Students from Holy Family Catholic School played a significant role in naming the complex. Their creativity and involvement were highlighted during the event, where they showcased artwork, performed their school song, and engaged in prayers and cheers for the project. “It was so nice to have all of the Holy Family students there to celebrate the grand opening,” said Jonathan Mallahan, executive director of Catholic Charities Housing.
Community Support and Services
The ceremony featured a blessing conducted by a local priest and was attended by various city leaders, community members, and representatives from both Catholic Charities and the Horizon Housing Alliance. Mayor Monika Lawrence praised the efforts of the project, noting that John Pilcher, executive director of Horizon Housing Alliance, had delivered on his promise to provide a high-quality housing project for Clarkston.
Pilcher emphasized that Holy Family Haven is designed to be more than just a shelter; it aims to create a supportive community for families. Mallahan confirmed that 30% of the apartments are still available for eligible families. Those interested in applying can reach out to Catholic Charities for further information. “It’s not just a place to live,” Mallahan explained. “It’s a foundation for families to make lasting changes in their lives and achieve their goals.”
In addition to housing, the complex will offer a comprehensive range of support services. These include mental health counseling, substance abuse recovery support, transportation for medical appointments, senior assistance, and employment resources. The initiative also incorporates a plan for fresh, healthy food distribution, reflecting a commitment to the well-being of residents.
Financial Backing and Accessibility
The development of Holy Family Haven was made possible through significant financial support. KeyBank Community Development Lending & Investment provided $31.4 million in capital for the project. The apartments will serve families and individuals earning no more than 30% to 60% of the area median income, with 35 units designated for individuals who have experienced homelessness.
Holy Family Haven stands as a testament to community collaboration and commitment to affordable housing in Clarkston, showcasing a model that prioritizes not just shelter but also the overall quality of life for its residents. Applications for the apartments can be submitted through the Catholic Charities website at housing.cceasternwa.org/how-to-apply.
