UPDATE: The community is grieving the loss of Cheryl Jean Husby, aged 76, who passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025, surrounded by her family at St. Luke’s Hospital. Her vibrant spirit and artistic contributions will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Cheryl was born on December 30, 1948, in Minneapolis to parents Dorothy and George Chergosky. A graduate of U-High in 1966, she went on to earn her B.F.A. in 1983, followed by her M.A. in 1984 from the University of Wisconsin Superior, and her M.F.A. in 1986 from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Her lifelong dedication to art and community service was evident through her numerous accolades, including a first-place award in clay at the prestigious Coconut Grove Art Festival.

Cheryl’s legacy extends beyond her artistic achievements. She and her husband, Bob Husby, married between semesters and famously lived above a bakery, sharing their love for art and life. Together, they founded Husby Pottery, which allowed them to travel across the country, including yearly stays in the Florida Keys. Cheryl was a vibrant community member, hosting joyous gatherings and themed parties that brought friends and family together in celebration.

Her family, including son Seth (Tracy) Draper, daughter Elissa Husby, and grandsons Zane and Noah Draper, will honor her memory at a visitation on November 5, 2025, at 10:00 AM at First Lutheran Church, located at 1100 E. Superior Street. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM, with a reception to celebrate her life.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, children, as well as siblings Barbara Swango, JoAnn (Mike) Mancuso, and George (Mary) Chergosky. She also leaves behind many loving cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the caring teams at St. Luke’s, Mayo Clinic, Benedictine, and Ecumen Lakeshore for their support during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites those wishing to honor Cheryl’s legacy to donate to the Depot Foundation or the Duluth Preservation Alliance. Friends and community members are encouraged to share condolences and photographs online at SunriseFuneralHomeandCemetery.com.

Cheryl’s passing marks a significant loss for the Duluth community, where her contributions to the arts and her warm spirit will be fondly remembered. As her family prepares to celebrate her life, the outpouring of love and memories from those she touched will undoubtedly serve as a testament to the impact she made.
