James Rowe, a cherished figure in the Ironton community and a long-time volunteer for the Memorial Day parade, passed away on October 24, 2025, at the age of 81. Rowe’s contributions to the parade spanned over three decades, including his role as grand marshal in 2020, a year marked by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rowe was a dedicated volunteer who served as parade commander in 2019 and was a trustee on the parade committee. Lou Pyles, a member of the Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade committee, remarked on Rowe’s reliability. “He was a great man and a very quiet man,” Pyles commented. “If you gave him a responsibility, he always got right back to you.”

The 2020 parade was notably different, as it was held in an abbreviated format without spectators and livestreamed to comply with public health regulations. Pyles recalled, “We always told him he would be famous because he was grand marshal in the COVID year.” Rowe played a key role in coordinating with state officials to ensure the event’s success.

Community Contributions and Radio Passion

In addition to his involvement with the parade, Rowe was an active member and former president of the Southern Ohio Amateur Radio Association (SOARA). Known by his call sign, N8TVO, Rowe was recognized for his public service efforts. In 2018, he received the Special Service Club award from the American Radio Relay League Ohio section manager, Scott Yonally. Pyles noted his significant commitment to the organization, stating, “He was very active in that.”

Rowe’s connection to the Memorial Day parade began in 1992 when SOARA volunteers supported emergency services with communications during the event. Reflecting on his motivations for participating, he stated, “It’s to honor the veterans. That’s why I do it.”

Pyles emphasized Rowe’s community impact, expressing, “He was a great man, and he will be missed by this community.” His legacy will undoubtedly be felt by many who benefited from his unwavering dedication.

Legacy and Family

James Rowe is survived by his wife, Faye Rowe, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. He leaves behind his daughter, Michele Harrison, of Ironton, and a loving family that includes granddaughter Beth Douglas, grandson Craig Rowe, and four great-grandchildren: Jimmy, Elijah, Olivia, and his “Little Buddy,” Presley.

Funeral services for Rowe will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home, located at 1004 S. 7th St., Ironton. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery. Visitation for friends and family will commence at 11 a.m. on the same day. Online condolences can be offered at www.phillipsfuneralhome.net. Rowe’s dedication to his community and his passion for service will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
