Couples Embrace Off-Grid Living: $160,000 Dream Home Achieved
UPDATE: A couple has turned their dream of owning a vacation home in the Pacific Northwest into reality by purchasing a 4.6-acre property for $160,000 and opting for off-grid living. This creative solution comes as housing prices soar in the area, with many homes priced over $500,000.
Sally Marks and her partner Carol fell in love with the enchanting landscapes of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula during a visit in 2010. They envisioned a place where they could kayak, hike, and immerse themselves in the vibrant local community. However, escalating property prices threatened to keep their dream just out of reach.
In a surprising turn, the couple discovered a listing for a wooded lot that lacked traditional amenities but was budget-friendly. “It didn’t have power, sewer, or water, but it was within our budget,” Marks shared. They made the bold decision to purchase the lot sight unseen in 2022 and acquired a rugged 20-foot Airstream Basecamp for $65,000 to serve as their new home.
Living off the grid is no small feat. The couple installed portable solar panels, captured rainwater, and even set up a water delivery system using a battery-operated pump. “We’re not complete Luddites,” Marks noted, emphasizing their commitment to sustainability without sacrificing all modern conveniences.
The couple also adapted their outdoor space to include a tent with a propane stove, turning it into a makeshift kitchen and dining area. Carol, a musician, uses the tent as a rehearsal space for her local band, demonstrating how they’ve integrated community and creativity into their off-grid lifestyle.
Their property is landlocked, requiring Carol to store her kayak at a nearby boat haven, which allows them access to essential amenities like hot showers and garbage disposal. They carefully prepare their land for winter before returning to their on-grid home in Arizona.
Despite the challenges, Marks and Carol are thriving in their new environment. They spend three to five months each year in Washington, fully embracing the beauty and adventure of forest life. “I’m grateful we’ve found a way to enjoy Washington without the hefty cost of homeownership,” Marks stated.
This off-grid lifestyle represents a growing trend among individuals seeking affordable housing alternatives in popular regions. As more people look to escape soaring real estate prices, creative solutions like Marks and Carol’s could inspire others to rethink homeownership.
For those dreaming of a second home in high-demand areas, this couple’s journey serves as a beacon of hope and an example of how to navigate financial challenges creatively.
