Drone Footage Captures Feeding Frenzy of Whaler Sharks Off Queensland Coast
Hundreds of whaler sharks were observed engaging in a feeding frenzy off the coast of Queensland, Australia, creating a stunning spectacle for onlookers at Moreton Island. The event was captured on video by a shark-watching professional using a drone, who later shared the footage on his Instagram account, @dronesharkapp.
The extraordinary gathering of sharks was attributed to the presence of a large bait ball, specifically a mass of sardines. These schooling fish often swim together to confuse predators, attracting the attention of the apex predators in the area. When sharks congregate in such numbers, it is referred to as a “shiver,” signifying a healthy marine ecosystem, according to Dr. Daryl McPhee, a shark expert from Bond University.
Expert Cautions Tourists Amid Natural Phenomenon
While the footage provided a mesmerizing view of the sharks in action, Dr. McPhee emphasized the need for caution among tourists and photographers. The presence of these predators, he noted, should not be taken lightly.
“While it’s captivating to watch, it’s crucial that people maintain a safe distance,” Dr. McPhee stated in an interview with 7NEWS. “The species of sharks present are likely to change throughout the day. It’s something that really should be appreciated, but there’s no way anybody should be entering the water around those bait balls, no matter where they are.”
The footage serves as a reminder of the dynamic nature of marine life and the importance of respecting wildlife, especially during such feeding events.
This recent occurrence aligns with other notable marine events, including the documented movements of a significant male great white shark named “Contender,” who was last pinged off the coast of Quebec on September 29, 2025. At approximately 14 feet long and weighing 1,653 pounds, Contender’s tracking information highlights the ongoing research and monitoring efforts in marine biology.
As these apex predators continue to thrive in their natural habitats, the public is encouraged to enjoy such sights from a safe distance, thereby promoting both safety and conservation of marine ecosystems.
The breathtaking drone footage of the whaler sharks not only fascinates viewers but also underscores the interconnectedness of marine life and the necessary precautions needed to ensure both human and animal safety in these vibrant environments.
