Boston Man Arrested Over Poll Buffet Dispute, Released by Judge
UPDATE: A chaotic scene erupted at a Dorchester polling place when a man was arrested after an aggressive confrontation over a buffet meant for poll workers. Richard Futrell, 46, was apprehended by Boston Police around 12:45 p.m. on Election Day, following a tirade fueled by his anger over lost SNAP benefits during the Trump administration.
Boston Municipal Court Judge Rebecca Figueroa has since ordered Futrell to stay away from the poll worker involved in the incident, highlighting the urgency of maintaining order at polling locations. Witnesses report that the disturbance escalated quickly after Futrell was told he could not help himself to food intended for voting officials at the Metropolitan Baptist Church.
Futrell reportedly confronted the poll worker, “stepping in her face” and verbally berating her after she informed him that the food was not for voters. The poll worker expressed feeling “intimidated” and feared for her safety as Futrell ranted about his entitlement to the food due to his loss of government assistance.
A voter waiting in line also described having to “stand back” as Futrell aggressively confronted the poll worker, who had taken away a plate of food he had prepared for himself. The situation escalated when Futrell blocked the doorway, preventing other voters from accessing the polling place.
According to an incident report obtained by the Herald, voting officials attempted to remove Futrell, but he became increasingly agitated, creating alarm among those present. Officers responding to the scene reported that Futrell yelled at them and began recording their actions, further complicating the arrest process.
The police report details how Futrell resisted arrest, allegedly pushing an officer and yelling aggressively. Officers eventually subdued him after a struggle, placing him in handcuffs. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office has requested a bail of $1,000 for Futrell, who faces multiple charges including assault and battery on a police officer, disturbing a public assembly, and resisting arrest.
As this situation develops, authorities emphasize the importance of maintaining a peaceful and secure voting environment. This incident serves as a reminder of the heightened tensions surrounding election events and the significance of ensuring voter access without disruption.
Futrell’s next court appearance will be closely monitored as his case unfolds. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
