Xbox Controllers Retain AA Batteries While Rivals Embrace Rechargeables

The debate over battery types in gaming controllers continues as Xbox maintains its preference for AA batteries, while PlayStation and Nintendo Switch have transitioned to rechargeable alternatives. This decision, rooted in consumer feedback, reflects a commitment to flexibility for gamers who have varying preferences.

Consumer Preferences Drive Battery Choices

The Xbox team has opted for traditional AA batteries in its controllers since the launch of the Xbox 360. This choice was not arbitrary; rather, it stemmed from direct inquiries to gamers about their preferences. In a discussion with Eurogamer in 2020, Jason Ronald, the brand’s partner program management director, stated, “When actually talking to gamers, there is a strong camp that really want AAs.” While some players express a preference for rechargeable options, Ronald acknowledged that the adaptability provided by AA batteries is a significant benefit.

In contrast, both PlayStation’s DualShock and DualSense controllers, as well as the Nintendo Switch’s Pro Controllers, utilize rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. The Joy-Con controllers for the Switch can also charge while connected to the console, enhancing convenience for users. This divergence in battery technology illustrates different approaches to user experience in gaming.

Flexibility and Partnerships

Xbox’s strategy allows gamers to choose between using AA batteries or rechargeable battery packs. Ronald emphasized the importance of offering flexibility, stating, “You can use a rechargeable battery pack and it works just like it does on the Elite.” The Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, for instance, can be charged via USB-C, either directly or through a dock.

The partnership with Duracell has solidified a consistent supply of batteries for Xbox controllers. Luke Anderson, the marketing manager for Duracell UK, noted this collaboration, affirming that “there’s always been this partnership with Duracell and Xbox.” While Duracell batteries are a common choice, gamers are not limited to a single brand; various official and third-party options are available to meet individual preferences.

Despite some users’ frustrations about needing additional accessories to switch to rechargeable batteries, the Xbox ecosystem provides various methods to customize the gaming experience. For instance, the Xbox One Play & Charge Kit enables the use of a rechargeable battery pack, while the option to use AA batteries remains.

The choice of battery type ultimately hinges on user preference, with Xbox offering a unique solution that contrasts with its competitors.
