BREAKING NEWS: East Grand Forks has just unveiled a trailhead sign honoring local biking legend Naomi Dunavan for her remarkable achievement of cycling the equivalent of the Earth’s circumference—24,901 miles. The dedication took place on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at the Crestwood Trailhead behind the VFW Arena, marking a significant milestone almost seven years after her incredible journey.

Dunavan expressed her joy at finally seeing the sign, which was initially prepared for installation back in 2018. “It was a beautiful eight years. This was so great and I’m so grateful for everyone that put it together,” she stated, reflecting on her journey and the community that supported her.

Her inspiring story resonates deeply in East Grand Forks, where Dunavan’s determination serves as a beacon of motivation. She shared a humorous memory when her grandson suggested, “Grandma, you should shoot for Pluto,” underscoring her adventurous spirit. With plans to bike the distance equivalent to the circumference of the moon, her dedication continues to inspire those around her.

East Grand Forks Parks and Recreation Superintendent Jeremy King emphasized the importance of Dunavan’s accomplishment. “We wanted to recognize her for this great achievement. She set her goal to ride the circumference of the earth and she achieved it. It is great to set a standard like that,” he remarked. Dunavan’s journey illustrates how personal goals can encourage community engagement with local trails and bike paths.

Present at the dedication, Minnesota Representative and former East Grand Forks Mayor Steve Gander highlighted the significance of the trails for all residents. “This trail gets used by people of all ages. It’s for little babies in strollers with their parents, it’s for older people sauntering on a sunset-soaked evening and it’s for Naomi Dunavan on her bike. It’s an amenity that we have in our own backyard, for everybody,” he stated with enthusiasm.

Dunavan’s biking journey spanned from 2010 to 2018, where she consistently logged impressive mileage, aiming for 25 miles a day. Her yearly totals included 2,040 miles in her first year, peaking at 3,230 miles in her final year of the challenge. “It is a big accomplishment for me; it means a lot to me. And I did it all on the bike paths and streets of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks – these beautiful bike paths,” she remarked during an interview in 2018.

As of now, Dunavan rides an electric trike, enjoying the scenic routes of the Greenway and local bike paths. Her presence continues to uplift the community, as she remains an active part of East Grand Forks’ biking culture.

This dedication not only celebrates Dunavan’s remarkable achievement but also serves as a reminder of the power of perseverance and community support. As East Grand Forks embraces this landmark, residents are encouraged to reflect on their own goals and the potential paths they can navigate.
