Four Dead, Eleven Injured as Speeding Car Slams into Crowd in Ybor
UPDATE: A tragic incident unfolded in Ybor City, Florida, early Saturday morning, resulting in four fatalities and eleven injuries after a speeding car crashed into a crowd. The Tampa Police Department confirmed the shocking news just after 12:40 a.m., as the city grapples with the aftermath of this devastating event.
Authorities report that a 22-year-old man, identified as Silas Sampson, faces eight felony charges, including four counts of vehicular homicide. The chaos began when police air units spotted two vehicles racing westbound on Hillsborough Avenue toward Interstate 275. One vehicle veered off, while Sampson’s car continued south on the interstate, evading an attempted traffic stop by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
During a press conference, Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw revealed that FHP troopers attempted a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver to halt the speeding car but were unsuccessful. The vehicle later sped into Ybor City, crashing near Bradley’s bar and plowing through a crowd of more than a dozen people gathered outside.
As a result of the crash, three victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth succumbed to injuries at a local hospital. As of around 5:30 a.m., one person remains in critical condition, with eight others hospitalized in stable condition. Two individuals with minor injuries declined treatment on the scene. All victims are confirmed to be adults over the age of 20.
Sampson, previously cited for speeding at 99 mph on Interstate 75 just two months ago, was arrested at the crash site. The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the community, highlighting the urgent need for road safety and responsible driving.
