Bill Maher Endorses Missile Defense Amid Cost Concerns on HBO
During the latest episode of HBO’s Real Time, host Bill Maher expressed support for a missile defense program, specifically referencing the proposed Golden Dome program. His comments came during a discussion on March 15, 2024, where he addressed concerns surrounding the program’s projected costs and timeline as outlined by former President Donald Trump.
In the online segment known as “Overtime,” Maher articulated his belief in the necessity of such a defense initiative. He stated, “I have a problem if we don’t [implement a missile defense program]. Like, just because Trump thought of it, I’m not against it.” Maher highlighted the importance of developing systems to counter the increasing threat of rogue missiles, which he described as a pressing concern for national security.
Representative Jared Moskowitz, who joined Maher on the program, agreed with his perspective. He emphasized the urgency of addressing advancements in Chinese military technology, particularly their capabilities in space. Moskowitz remarked, “I don’t have a problem if we do a missile defense program. China is — their technology, they’re putting it in space.” This statement underscores the competitive landscape of global defense technologies and the implications for U.S. security.
Despite his endorsement, Maher raised skepticism about the feasibility of the project, particularly regarding the timeline and financial estimates. He referenced Trump’s claim that the initiative would require $180 billion and take three years to complete, expressing doubt about these projections. Maher remarked, “Whatever it is, of course, everything is overscheduled and doesn’t ever end on time or on budget. But that’s, to me, a worthy thing.”
The discussion reflects a broader dialogue about defense spending and the technological arms race, particularly as nations enhance their military capabilities. Maher’s willingness to support a defense initiative, despite his criticisms of its management, indicates a nuanced view that values national security while also advocating for transparency and accountability in government spending.
As the debate surrounding missile defense continues, Maher’s commentary adds to the growing discourse on national security priorities in an era marked by rapid technological advancements and evolving threats. The conversation highlights the importance of bipartisan support in addressing these complex challenges facing the United States and its allies.
