UPDATE: Christopher Newport University (CNU) has made history by finishing an unbeaten regular season in football, defeating The College of New Jersey 27-7 on Friday night in Ewing. This marks the first time in the program’s history, established in 2001, that the Captains have completed a 10-0 regular season.

The victory solidified CNU’s position as a powerhouse in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, where they went 7-0 this season. Quarterback Connor Barry showcased his skills, completing 18 of 26 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 33 yards and a touchdown, further demonstrating his dual-threat capability.

Colin Hart made headlines by becoming the all-time receptions leader for CNU, hauling in seven passes for 101 yards. His achievement adds to the excitement surrounding the team as they prepare for the playoffs. Gunner White contributed significantly with a touchdown reception and 83 yards on 19 carries.

With this win, Coach Paul Crowley’s Captains have extended their winning streak to 15 games, dating back to last season. The team will learn its playoff fate when the 40-team field is announced at 5 p.m. on Sunday on NCAA.com. They are anticipated to earn a first-round bye and possibly host a game in the round of 32.

CNU’s scoring began with a 2-yard touchdown run from Zavier Kennedy with 7:20 left in the second quarter, breaking a scoreless tie after a lengthy 88-yard drive. Following a defensive stand that forced a three-and-out, Barry connected with Josh Powell for an 11-yard touchdown, giving CNU a commanding 14-0 lead at halftime.

Barry continued to dominate in the second half, adding a 2-yard touchdown run on the opening drive, pushing the score to 21-0. The College of New Jersey’s Joe Visaggio finally broke through for the Lions with a 17-yard touchdown run with 10:44 left in the fourth quarter, concluding a substantial 10-play, 80-yard drive.

Barry capped the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown pass to White, sealing the game at 1:54 left in the contest. This remarkable season sets the stage for CNU as they aim for playoff glory.
