Milton Hershey’s Legacy Inspires Generations Through Education
Milton Hershey’s journey from humble beginnings to creating a chocolate empire has left a lasting legacy that continues to inspire individuals like Jason Wolfe. Born in 1857 in Derry Township, Pennsylvania, Hershey faced numerous challenges, including dropping out of school at the age of 12. Despite early setbacks in his candy business, which included two failed attempts, he eventually found success with the Lancaster Caramel Company.
In 1900, Hershey sold the caramel business for $1 million, pivoting his focus to chocolate. His relentless pursuit of the right formula for a chocolate bar led to the creation of the iconic Hershey bar. Moving back to his hometown, Hershey established a company town that not only provided jobs but also prioritized the welfare of his employees by offering schools, parks, and housing.
Hershey’s philanthropic spirit was evident in his personal life as well. After marrying Catherine Sweeney in 1898 and facing challenges with starting a family, the couple dedicated their wealth to charitable endeavors. This commitment culminated in the founding of the Milton Hershey School for orphaned boys in 1909, which has since evolved into a comprehensive educational institution serving over 1,800 students today.
A Lasting Impact on Education
The Milton Hershey School now serves children from low-income families across the United States, providing not only education but also housing, food, and healthcare. The school, originally starting with just ten boys, has expanded significantly, thriving under the governance of the Milton Hershey Trust. Established to fund the school, the Trust’s assets have grown to exceed $7 billion, showcasing the enduring impact of Hershey’s vision.
Among the school’s notable alumni is Jason Wolfe, who faced his own challenges. Abandoned by his father, Wolfe entered the Milton Hershey Home at the age of ten, where he found structure and support. He graduated from high school in 1987 and later attended Bloomsburg University.
Wolfe’s journey also included significant hurdles, such as a severe accident that led him to teach himself computer programming while recovering. His perseverance paid off when he founded the first online coupon site in 1995, eventually growing into Giftcards.com, which now generates over $110 million in annual sales.
Giving Back to the Community
Just like Milton Hershey, Wolfe is committed to giving back. He is actively involved in charitable work, including mission efforts in Haiti. Reflecting on his connection to Hershey, Wolfe remarked, “Probably, subconsciously it was inside me that I wanted to walk in his footsteps.”
The stories of both men illustrate a shared legacy of resilience and philanthropy. Hershey’s decision to create a school for those in need has transformed countless lives, providing opportunities for education and growth.
As people enjoy a Hershey bar or purchase a gift card, they can reflect on the powerful impact of two individuals who chose to rise above their difficulties, creating legacies that continue to inspire future generations. The story of Milton Hershey and Jason Wolfe serves as a reminder that challenges can pave the way for remarkable achievements and contributions to society.
