Urgent Closure of Virginia Capital Trail Begins Dec. 1 for Repairs
URGENT UPDATE: Starting as early as December 1, 2025, a significant section of the Virginia Capital Trail will be closed for critical construction, impacting both pedestrians and cyclists. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a multiweek closure to replace the bridge deck between mile markers 3 and 4 along the Jamestown leg of the 52-mile trail.
Crews will shut down the trail along John Tyler Highway (Route 5), specifically from just east of Governor’s Landing Road to Heritage Landing Road. This closure is expected to last for two to three weeks, but officials warn that the timeline may shift due to weather conditions.
As part of this urgent repair work, the bridge will receive new composite decking boards featuring enhanced texture to improve friction and safety for all users. The changes aim to significantly reduce the risk of slips and falls, making the trail safer for the community.
The Virginia Capital Trail serves as a vital connection between Jamestown and downtown Richmond, facilitating not only recreational activities but also daily commuting for many residents. The planned Trail757 project aims to further enhance connectivity by linking the Capital Trail with Colonial Williamsburg, showcasing the importance of this route for both tourism and local transportation.
With this closure set to begin soon, trail users are urged to plan ahead and seek alternative routes. The VDOT emphasizes the importance of safety during this construction phase and appreciates the community’s understanding as these improvements are made.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story, as the situation may evolve based on weather conditions and construction progress. Share this information with fellow trail users to ensure everyone stays informed and safe during this crucial repair work.
