Poinsettia Exhibit Brightens Holiday Spirit at Buffalo Gardens
The holiday season has officially commenced at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, with the opening of its annual poinsettia exhibit. This vibrant display, showcasing a multitude of poinsettias in various colors and shapes, invites visitors into a festive atmosphere that embodies the spirit of the season.
The exhibit represents a significant effort by the Gardens, according to Shaunna Mooney, the Marketing Manager. “It is absolutely beautiful,” she remarked. “We have hundreds and hundreds of poinsettias in all different kinds of colors, varieties, shapes. It feels like a holiday magical scene in here, and it’s so warm.”
Creating this enchanting display involves collaboration among many team members. Mooney noted, “It takes a lot of hands, a lot of help. Our horticulture team does an incredible job putting together these exhibits and these displays. We grow some of the poinsettias ourselves, some of them we order in, so it takes a lot of different people to bring this all together, to bring some magical joy to the community.”
The poinsettias thrive in the conservatory, where the warm, dry air mimics their native environment. “The poinsettias do a great job in here, especially where it’s warm. They’re native to Mexico, so they really love that dry heat,” Mooney explained.
Visitors to the exhibit will also discover unique color varieties not typically found in commercial settings. “We have some really, really unique colors that you maybe haven’t seen before,” Mooney highlighted, mentioning shades of pink, orange, and peach that are seldom seen in grocery stores or nurseries.
This exhibit has become a cherished tradition for many families in Western New York. “It’s a big tradition for many people in Western New York,” Mooney said. “People love to come and visit every holiday season to bring their families, bring a date, come and do something relaxing that you wouldn’t otherwise do in the winter.”
The Botanical Gardens has scheduled a variety of holiday-themed events during the exhibit’s run. Highlights include “Poinsettias After Dark,” visits from Santa, and a new mini-golf experience set up throughout the exhibit on two special nights. Additionally, the Gardens will host “Bricks and Brews,” an adults-only event where guests can construct a custom Lego version of the conservatory while enjoying drinks.
