Nipsey Hussle Foundation Distributes 5,000 Turkeys to South LA
The Neighborhood Nip Foundation hosted its inaugural turkey drive on November 21, 2023, distributing approximately 5,000 free Thanksgiving turkeys to residents of South Los Angeles. This event marked the first public activation from the foundation’s Slauson Avenue parking lot, the historic site of the late rapper Nipsey Hussle’s original Marathon Clothing store.
Samiel Asghedom, Nipsey Hussle’s brother and a key figure in the foundation, emphasized the significance of the location. He remarked, “This is where my brother first sold his mixtape. He ended up opening businesses in this parking lot and then buying the whole lot.” Asghedom expressed pride in transforming the space into a community hub, stating, “We turned this whole lot into the Neighborhood Nip Foundation. So, it’s real important to be able to activate from here.”
In collaboration with the Think Watts Foundation, the Neighborhood Nip Foundation aims to foster community spirit and support for local families. The turkey drive attracted many attendees, including Charles Wright and his grandson, who expressed their appreciation for the event, saying, “We came to get turkeys and everything is wonderful.”
Asghedom highlighted that this turkey drive is a pivotal moment for the foundation as it embarks on its mission to serve the South Los Angeles community. “I think any time we can come out and help, throughout the year is the plan,” he noted. The drive is part of a broader initiative to establish the renovated site as a community center for students, providing access to academic resources, music studies, and studio facilities.
The Neighborhood Nip Foundation’s commitment to community service is particularly poignant given the legacy of Nipsey Hussle, who was tragically shot outside his store on March 31, 2019, at the age of 33. Hussle left behind two children and a vision for uplifting his community. The foundation continues to honor his memory by creating opportunities for youth and families in the area.
In a city where access to resources can often be limited, initiatives like this turkey drive play a crucial role in supporting those in need. The foundation’s efforts reflect a dedication to fostering a sense of community and resilience in South Los Angeles. As the holiday season approaches, such acts of generosity serve as a reminder of the power of local organizations in making a meaningful impact.
