Bari Weiss Defends Controversial Decision to Pull 60 Minutes Story
Bari Weiss, Editor-in-Chief of CBS News, has reiterated her defense of the decision to withdraw a segment from the program 60 Minutes that reported on the Trump administration’s deportation of migrants to a prison in El Salvador. In a memo sent to staff on December 24, 2023, Weiss addressed the controversy surrounding the decision, emphasizing the need to restore public trust in journalism.
In her message, Weiss highlighted a significant concern: the majority of Americans reportedly do not trust the press. She stated, “It isn’t because they’re crazy. To win back their trust, we have to work hard.” Weiss elaborated on the steps necessary for regaining this trust, which include conducting thorough research and focusing on stories that have been overlooked or misrepresented in the media.
The memo also addressed the editorial standards that CBS News aims to uphold, particularly regarding contentious subjects. Weiss noted that such standards may provoke backlash, especially during slow news cycles. She asserted, “No amount of outrage—whether from activist organizations or the White House—will derail us.” Weiss reinforced that the mission of CBS News is to inform the public and ensure accuracy, rather than to cater to specific political factions or social media trends.
The decision to hold the story was met with criticism from Sharyn Alfonsi, the correspondent who worked on the segment. Alfonsi characterized the decision as “political,” suggesting it was influenced by external pressures rather than journalistic integrity. The piece included interviews with Venezuelan deportees who had been sent to the harsh CECOT prison in El Salvador, a topic that has drawn significant attention.
Although the segment was ultimately withdrawn, portions of it had already been viewed by some audiences after it leaked online. Canadian broadcaster Global TV, which airs 60 Minutes in Canada, had featured the segment on its app before the withdrawal occurred.
In closing her memo, Weiss expressed gratitude to her staff, especially those working during the holiday season. She wished them a Merry Christmas, acknowledging the dedication required to uphold journalistic standards during challenging times.
This incident underscores the ongoing debate within the media about balancing editorial integrity with public perception, particularly in a polarized political climate. As Weiss emphasized, restoring the integrity of the news is a complex and crucial endeavor for the industry.
