Bondi Beach Gunman Charged with 59 Offenses After Terror Attack
A suspected gunman involved in a recent terror attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney has been charged with 59 offenses, including 15 counts of murder. This mass shooting, which occurred on December 3, 2023, during a Hanukkah celebration, left 15 individuals dead and around 40 others injured. The attack specifically targeted members of the Jewish community, drawing widespread condemnation and concern.
The two assailants, identified as Sajid Akram, 50, who died at the scene, and his younger brother, Naveed Akram, 24, were both implicated in the shooting. Naveed was charged after regaining consciousness in a Sydney hospital. The charges he faces include one count of murder for each victim, one count of committing a terrorist act, and 40 counts of causing harm with intent to murder. These latter charges stem from injuries inflicted on multiple victims and the discovery of improvised explosive devices in the Akrams’ vehicle at the crime scene.
New South Wales Police stated that they are treating the attack as a terrorist act inspired by Islamic State. According to a police statement, they allege that the actions of the accused were intended to cause death and serious injury while advancing a religious cause, thereby instilling fear within the community. Naveed Akram is scheduled to appear in court on April 8, 2026.
The shooting unfolded during a Hanukkah event attended by over 1,000 people. Among the deceased were prominent community figures, including British-born rabbi Eli Schlanger and Holocaust survivor Alex Kleytman, as well as a ten-year-old girl named Matilda. This incident marks the deadliest mass shooting in Australia since the Port Arthur tragedy in 1996, which resulted in 35 fatalities. Following that event, Australia implemented some of the strictest gun control laws in the world, leading to only 31 firearm deaths nationwide from 2023 to 2024.
Investigations revealed that Sajid Akram legally acquired the firearms used in the attack. In response to this tragedy, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced plans to examine the existing gun control laws, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations. “The government is prepared to take whatever action is necessary,” he stated, highlighting the prospect of restricting gun ownership to Australian citizens. This measure could have prevented Sajid Akram, who entered Australia in 1998 on a student visa and later became a permanent resident, from obtaining firearms. Naveed Akram, however, is a citizen by birth.
As funeral services for the victims began this week, they were accompanied by a significant police presence. A vigil held on December 5 honored the youngest victim, Matilda, while twenty others remain hospitalized with injuries from the attack. The incident has reignited discussions about antisemitism in Australia, prompting Albanese to express solidarity with the Jewish community. In a video message, he stated, “As Prime Minister, I say on behalf of all Australians to the Jewish community, ‘We stand with you.’” He condemned the attack, calling it an “act of evil antisemitism.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also addressed the situation, stating that Australia’s policies may have contributed to the rise of antisemitism. “Antisemitism is a cancer that spreads when leaders remain silent,” he remarked, calling for a stronger response to such hatred.
The Bondi Beach shooting has not only shocked the local community but has also raised critical questions about the security and safety of minority groups in Australia. As the investigation continues, the nation grapples with the implications of this tragic event and seeks to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
