Celebrating the Life of Richard Capra: A Legacy of Love and Dedication

Richard Eugene Capra, who passed away in 2025 at the age of 69, leaves behind a vibrant legacy filled with love, adventure, and dedication. Born in 1956 in San Francisco to a yodeler and an Alaskan Pipeline worker, Richard’s life unfolded like a captivating film, marked by cherished relationships and unforgettable experiences. His journey reflects a spirit of joy and community that touched the lives of many.

Growing up in the Hunters Point neighborhood, Richard was known for his sociable personality. He thrived in an environment where garage doors opened on Saturdays, inviting neighbors to share meals and stories. During his time as a linebacker at Woodrow Wilson High School, he earned the nickname “Cool Cap” thanks to his impressive sideburns and charismatic presence.

Richard’s passion for music emerged early in life. As a child, he transformed his bedroom into a makeshift studio, spending hours playing drums. His dedication led him to acquire an eight-piece Ludwig kit, which he transported to legendary venues in San Francisco, including Mabuhay Gardens. It was there that he played with the popular power-pop band, Gypsy Dream, contributing dramatic drum fills and backup vocals to their 1979 track, “Heart’s Desire.”

One of the pivotal moments in Richard’s life occurred when he ordered five scoops of ice cream at Baskin-Robbins and offered tickets to a Rolling Stones concert to a Sicilian-American counter girl named Marlene. This encounter blossomed into a deep love that lasted for 43 years. The couple danced through San Francisco’s disco scene, frequented the Geneva Drive-In movie theatre, and ultimately married at the Church of the Epiphany in the Excelsior district. Together, they raised three children in San Rafael, creating a life filled with joy and laughter.

A Devoted Father and Leader in Healthcare

Fatherhood was Richard’s proudest role. He became known as the “fun T-ball coach,” built imaginative school dioramas, and was the loudest supporter of his children’s interests. Richard never hesitated to join in on backyard basketball games or pool noodle fights, often heard expressing his love and pride for his family. His legacy is reflected in the humor, generosity, and kindness of his children.

Professionally, Richard dedicated 28 years to UC San Francisco, where he advanced from a radiology technician to the Chief Administrative Officer of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Under his leadership, UCSF Orthopaedics gained national recognition as one of the most respected departments in the field. He received the prestigious UC Chancellor’s Award and played a significant role in the establishment of the Marin Heart and Cancer Care Institutes at Marin General Hospital. Additionally, he served as President of the Academic Orthopaedic Consortium, demonstrating his commitment to championing both his colleagues and patient care.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Marlene; his children, Andrew (Monique), Olivia, and Gregory (Sarah); his sisters, Pauline “Babe” Rispoli and Darlene “Raye” Capra; and a wide circle of friends, including his cycling crew and early morning workout buddies. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Anita Capra, and his sister, Charlene “Gay” Joachim.

In honoring Richard’s memory, his family requests that friends celebrate his life in a way he would have appreciated. Instead of flowers, they suggest enjoying a Mai Tai, dancing with a loved one, or making a new friend.
