Minimum Wage Then and Now: A Comparison of Purchasing Power
In a reflective commentary, Michael Mentnech of Keaau, Hawaii, contrasts the purchasing power of the minimum wage from 1964 to today. He recalls his own experience of earning a minimum wage of $1.25 per hour, a time when popular cultural phenomena such as Mary Poppins and Goldfinger captivated audiences, while the Vietnam War was a prominent topic in news reports.
During that summer of 1964, the minimum wage allowed him to purchase a substantial meal at McDonald’s, including three hamburgers, three fries, three Cokes, and two ice cream cones. This total cost was just $1.25, showcasing how far that amount could stretch at the time. In stark contrast, he points out that the same meal today costs approximately $28.59, highlighting a significant increase in food prices.
Mentnech argues that the current federal minimum wage does not reflect the rising cost of living and purchasing power, noting that it only accounts for about one-fourth of what it used to cover in 1964. He attributes this decline to the implementation of trickle-down economics and suggests that the current economic framework is not effectively addressing the needs of workers.
While Mentnech does not propose a specific solution to the issue of wage stagnation, he emphasizes the importance of recognizing the disparities in purchasing power over time. He calls for a reevaluation of current policies to better support those earning minimum wage.
The letter serves as a reminder of the evolving economic landscape and the ongoing debates surrounding wage levels and cost of living across the United States. As the conversation continues, voices like Mentnech’s contribute to a broader understanding of these critical issues.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser encourages public discourse by welcoming letters to the editor, providing a platform for individuals to express their opinions on pressing matters like wage inequality.
