The series finale of Stranger Things has left fans questioning the fate of several key characters, particularly Kali, portrayed by Linnea Berthelsen. Released on March 15, 2024, the concluding season delivered a dramatic ending packed with suspense, though it raised significant questions about certain plot points.

While many lingering mysteries were addressed, the body count in this final season was surprisingly low. Previous seasons had seen beloved characters like Eddie Munson, Barb Holland, and Bob Newby meet tragic ends. In contrast, the Duffer Brothers, who created the series, left the fate of Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown, somewhat ambiguous. During an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, Ross Duffer commented on Eleven’s fate, stating, “She lives on in [her friends’] hearts, whether that’s real or not.” This cryptic statement has led to much speculation about whether Eleven truly survived the confrontation with the series’ antagonist, Vecna.

In the finale, Kali’s storyline took a pivotal turn as she attempted to convince Eleven that they should sacrifice themselves to break the cycle of abuse tied to their powers. Her concern was that survival would lead to further exploitation by Dr. Kay, played by Linda Hamilton, and her team, who were determined to misuse their abilities.

As the final battle unfolded at the Upside Down Hawkins Lab, tensions escalated when the Wolf Pack Unit closed in. While David Harbour‘s character, Hopper, managed to rescue Eleven, he arrived too late to save Kali. Amid the chaos, Kali was confronted by Akers, who threatened her life to ensure Eleven’s capture. Despite efforts to destroy the military threat, including a bomb deployed by Brett Gelman‘s character, Murray Bauman, Akers ultimately carried out his sinister intentions.

In a heart-wrenching moment, Eleven held Kali as she succumbed to her injuries. The narrative took an intriguing twist as Mike, Eleven’s romantic partner, suggested that Kali might have assisted Eleven in faking her own death to escape the violent conflict. This theory posits that Kali’s decision was influenced by Hopper’s earlier words about the importance of connection and community in Eleven’s life.

There was also speculation among fans that Kali could have been secretly working with Vecna, although her actions in the finale painted a different picture. By sacrificing herself, she appeared to redeem her character and provide Eleven with a chance at a life she had never fully experienced.

As Matt Duffer noted, the destruction of the interdimensional portal was inspired by cinematic themes from David Lean’s 1957 war film, The Bridge on the River Kwai. The Duffer brothers aimed to craft a supernatural parallel where their characters needed to eliminate a bridge linking Hawkins to a malevolent dimension.

In discussing the finale, Matt stated, “We wanted each of the characters to find happiness but in their own specific ways.” This sentiment resonates throughout the series as it concludes, leaving audiences to reflect on the journeys of their favorite characters.

As fans continue to dissect the finale, the fate of Kali remains a poignant topic of discussion. Stranger Things Season 5 is now available for streaming on Netflix, inviting viewers to explore its intricate storytelling and character arcs.
