Maks Chmerkovskiy expressed profound emotion during the In Memoriam segment of the Dancing With the Stars 20th anniversary special, which aired on November 11, 2022. Reflecting on the tribute, Chmerkovskiy, 45, stated, “I felt the second biggest, most heartfelt part was what is that called, In Memoriam?” He remarked on the poignant performance by dancers Ezra and Rylee, emphasizing their ability to capture the essence of the moment. “Those are my people. You know, it’s my generation, people who drew tears a little bit like when Kirstie Alley popped up and like, overcame me a little bit,” he shared.

Alley, who competed on Dancing With the Stars in season 12 in 2011 and again in the All-Stars season the following year, was partnered with Chmerkovskiy during both seasons. The tribute also recognized other former contestants, including Jerry Springer, Cloris Leachman, Aaron Carter, Shannen Doherty, and Florence Henderson. Alley’s death was confirmed by her children, William True Stevenson and Lillie Stevenson, in a post shared on her Instagram account on December 5, 2022. They wrote, “We are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, only recently discovered.” The message highlighted her strength during her illness and the love she had for her family.

In a heartfelt tribute to Alley, Chmerkovskiy reflected on their relationship, sharing, “My dearest Kirstie, We haven’t spoken lately and I’ll tell you everything when I finally see you, but for now I want to say that I love you very much and I wish you the most peaceful rest.” He continued, “You were one of the most unique people I have ever met and easily one of the brightest moments of my personal and professional life.”
