Mexican Circus Revives Ancient Maya Myth in Captivating Performance

A unique performance blending circus arts and ancient Maya mythology has taken center stage in Mexico City. Directed by Jorge Díaz, “Mortal Leap into Xib’alb’a” draws inspiration from the Popol Vuh, a sacred text recounting the adventures of hero twins Ixbalanqué and Hunahpú. The show not only entertains but also serves to revitalize the rich cultural narratives of the Maya civilization.

Díaz, who has a deep personal connection to these myths, recalls reading the Popol Vuh to his son, highlighting the importance of preserving these stories. “We have plenty of beautiful, pre-Hispanic tales,” he said. “But we sometimes forget.” The performance, which debuted in 2023, creatively reinterprets the twins’ journey through the Maya underworld, where they outsmart death and transform into celestial bodies.

Blending Art Forms

The artistic vision behind “Mortal Leap into Xib’alb’a” comes from Tránsito Cinco, a troupe founded two decades ago by Díaz and fellow artist Jessica González. Initially a theater group, it evolved into a platform for circus arts. “We wanted to find something that could connect theater with dance,” González explained.

The company now boasts a repertoire of 16 productions, each crafted with a strong narrative focus. “Our shows are built around a theme or storyline,” she noted, emphasizing the potential of circus arts to address various social issues. Their approach is captured in the documentary “Somnia,” which chronicles the history and vision of the troupe. Director Arely Cantellano praised their work, stating, “It opens those doors to many different arts and invites us all to take part.”

A Journey of Transformation

Díaz plays a multifaceted role in the production, overseeing not just the direction but also the safety of performers, such as Yareli Reyes, who performs a hair suspension act. This particular segment resonates with him personally, as he originally envisioned portraying one of the twins. Ultimately, he chose to focus on directing, allowing him to gain new insights into his art.

The performance unfolds over an hour, depicting the twins’ journey from birth to their resurrection. The narrative begins with a dramatic moment from the Popol Vuh, where the twins are conceived through a symbolic act involving their father’s skull. As they grow, they engage in a ritual sport that enrages the lords of Xib’alb’a, leading to their deaths and subsequent transformation into the Sun and Moon.

“Under the Mayan worldview, death is not an ending, but a chance to be reborn,” Díaz explained. This perspective is crucial to the narrative, revealing how ancient Maya culture perceives death as an opportunity for renewal.

As the show continues to captivate audiences, it reaffirms the relevance of ancient stories in contemporary contexts. “There are many elements from pre-Hispanic Indigenous traditions that can be brought into circus performance,” Díaz said. “Ways to use them, reinterpret them and give them new meaning onstage.”

The recent performances in Mexico City in late November 2023 have received positive feedback, with spectators appreciating the fusion of circus and storytelling. “I love circus arts because, within them, the frontier with entertainment shifts,” remarked marketing strategist Alba Vida after witnessing the documentary showcase.
