Bijou Phillips is bravely confronting a serious health crisis as she fights for her life, motivated by her love for her 12-year-old daughter, Fianna. In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, the actress opened up about her struggles and the urgent need for a kidney transplant, following a hospitalization that began on February 11, 2023.

Phillips, 45, described her long battle with kidney issues, having been born with underdeveloped kidneys that required dialysis when she was just three months old. Although she initially recovered, her kidney function has diminished over the years, necessitating a transplant at the age of 36. Now, she finds herself back on dialysis, a situation that she has publicly addressed in hopes of raising awareness about organ donation and the severe shortage of viable kidneys.

In her heartfelt conversation, Phillips acknowledged the daunting challenge of finding a donor. “To put my health out there publicly was terrifying, but my friends and family got fed up with me. They took control and were like, ‘We’re doing this,’” she said. Her support network includes her siblings, her boyfriend, businessman Jamie Mazur, and close friends such as Nicky and Paris Hilton, who advocate for her while she is incapacitated.

Despite her circumstances, Phillips maintains a positive outlook. She noted, “I feel pretty good since I started dialysis,” illustrating her resilience even as her health hangs in the balance. She is currently exploring the possibility of a kidney exchange through her brother, who is not a direct match but could help her move up the transplant list.

In her candid discussion about the difficulties of navigating the healthcare system, Phillips revealed the financial strain associated with her medical care. She recounted her previous experience in which the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) initially denied coverage for her first transplant. “We had to fight for months to get approval. This time around, I carry multiple insurance policies,” she explained, emphasizing the complexities and challenges that come with securing necessary medical treatments.

Raising Awareness and Facing Mortality

Phillips highlighted the importance of raising awareness for organ donations, stating, “There are 90,000 people in America that need a kidney. It’s something people don’t really understand or talk about.” She expressed her gratitude for the approximately 1,300 individuals who have offered to get tested to see if they could be a match for her, with around 50 or 60 potential candidates emerging from that group.

Her experience has deepened her compassion and spirituality, as she finds solace through prayer and reflection. “I have found a deep need for spirituality that I didn’t have when I was younger. I’m going to try to do a traditional Lent, fasting on Wednesdays and Fridays,” she shared. Phillips recognizes that her journey has transformed her perspective on life, allowing her to appreciate the small joys even amid adversity.

As a single mother, her primary focus is on being present for Fianna. She spoke fondly of her daughter, describing her as “the strongest little human” who excels in school and is musically talented. “I don’t deserve such an amazing human in my life. It’s magical,” Phillips remarked, illustrating the bond they share despite the challenges they face.

Phillips is determined to maintain a sense of normalcy for her daughter while managing her health issues. “Today I took my daughter to school, came home, had a little snack, went to dialysis, came home… That’s my day,” she said, underscoring her commitment to balancing motherhood with her medical needs.

As she contemplates her future, Phillips remains hopeful. “I’m just giving it to God. I’ve been tested my whole life,” she stated. Her journey serves not only as a personal struggle but also as a call to action for others to consider the impact of organ donation. By sharing her story, Bijou Phillips aims to inspire compassion and understanding for those facing similar health battles.
