Iced Beverages Linked to Health Issues, Experts Warn
A case from Taiwan highlights potential health risks associated with excessive consumption of iced beverages. A female patient who consumed iced coffee daily reported gastrointestinal discomfort, including abdominal pain, bloating, and occasional diarrhea. Additionally, she experienced skin issues such as eczema and rashes. Seeking relief, she turned to the Cihang Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Clinic, where practitioner Dr. Li Ying-da provided treatment.
Dr. Li recommended that the patient eliminate cold foods and beverages from her diet and prescribed TCM remedies aimed at warming her digestive system. Following this treatment plan, the patient experienced significant recovery.
In TCM, energy in the body is categorized as “yin” (cold) and “yang” (warm). According to Dr. Grace Zhang, a TCM practitioner at the Northern Medical Center in New York, yang energy is essential for maintaining the body’s internal warmth, vitality, and immune function. Regular consumption of iced beverages can lead the body to expend its own energy to warm these cold drinks for digestion, gradually depleting yang energy.
As yang energy diminishes, the digestive system may weaken, potentially leading to a range of health issues. Dr. Zhang noted that this depletion can result in respiratory symptoms, an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, lowered immunity, and heightened susceptibility to fatigue and illness.
The implications of these findings are particularly relevant as iced beverages have become increasingly popular in many cultures. While enjoying a refreshing drink is common, moderation is essential.
Dr. Li’s patient’s experience serves as a reminder about the potential consequences of our dietary choices. As consumers become more health-conscious, it may be beneficial to consider the impact of cold beverages on overall well-being.
Although the anecdotal evidence from TCM practitioners highlights potential risks, further scientific investigation is necessary to fully understand the effects of iced beverages on human health. As awareness grows, individuals may seek to balance their enjoyment of cold drinks with mindfulness about their health.
