Piedmont Mountainside Radiation Oncology Center Celebrates First Year of Care

Piedmont Mountainside Hospital’s Radiation Oncology Center is celebrating its first anniversary, marked by a significant increase in patient demand and expanded services. Since its opening on February 4, 2025, the facility has delivered over 3,000 radiation treatments, providing essential cancer care to communities across multiple counties, including Pickens, Fannin, Gilmer, Gordon, and Murray, and even attracting patients from as far as Murphy, North Carolina.

Rapid Growth and Expanded Services

Initially operating on a half-day schedule, the center quickly transitioned to full-day operations to accommodate the growing number of patients seeking treatment. This surge reflects not only the regional need for high-quality oncology services but also the center’s reputation for compassionate care. The facility has become a vital resource, alleviating the need for patients to travel long distances for advanced cancer therapies.

Piedmont Mountainside’s Radiation Oncology Center is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including a linear accelerator and a CT simulation scanner. It features the pioneering Brainlab ExactTrac Dynamic system, the first of its kind in the Piedmont system, which allows for precise radiosurgery. The range of treatment options includes Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), and specialized techniques such as Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) for breast cancer patients.

Under the leadership of radiation oncologist Dr. Adam Nowlan, the program has received notable acclaim from patients. A recent survey conducted by Press Ganey showcased the high level of satisfaction among those treated at the center. One patient remarked, “Dr. Nowlan was exceptional.
