Discovery Shoppe League Donates $15,000 to Local School Program
The Discovery Shoppe League, a non-profit organization operating in Chico, California, since 1959, has made a significant contribution to local education. On October 29, 2023, volunteer Shelley Tedford presented a check for $15,000 to Parker Bush, a teacher at Shasta Elementary School, along with students Emma Barnum and Nick Bonacich. The funds will support the school’s fifth-grade students in attending the Shady Creek Environmental Camp, a four-day, three-night program designed to enhance their learning experiences through nature.
The Discovery Shoppe operates entirely on volunteer efforts, with all proceeds directed back into the community. This year, the organization plans to distribute over $165,381 to a total of sixteen local charities. This commitment underscores the League’s dedication to supporting educational initiatives and community projects in the Chico area.
Shelley Tedford took the initiative to sponsor Shasta Elementary for this funding, highlighting the importance of providing students with opportunities for environmental education. The Shady Creek camp experience will offer the children hands-on learning activities that promote environmental stewardship and teamwork.
The Discovery Shoppe, located at 315 Flume Street in Chico, relies on the generosity of community members who donate items for resale. These efforts not only help fund local programs but also foster a spirit of collaboration among residents.
In addition to supporting schools, the organization encourages community engagement through reader-submitted snapshots of local events. These snapshots, which highlight service projects, awards, and educational activities, are published regularly and help create a vibrant community narrative.
For those interested in contributing to this initiative or submitting photos for publication, the Discovery Shoppe invites high-resolution JPGs accompanied by a brief description to be sent to [email protected]. Photos should include a maximum of twelve people and relevant details about the event.
Through its ongoing support of local charities and schools, The Discovery Shoppe League continues to play a vital role in enhancing the quality of education and community life in Chico.
