Guam Memorial Honors 33 Nurses with Inaugural DAISY Awards
The Guam Memorial Hospital Authority (GMHA) celebrated the dedication of nursing professionals by honoring 33 exemplary nurses with the inaugural DAISY Award on November 18, 2023. This award recognizes nurses who consistently demonstrate compassion and skill in patient care, aligning with the hospital’s mission to provide exceptional healthcare to the community of Guam.
During the ceremony, GMHA Interim Administrator Dr. Joleen Aguon emphasized the profound impact these nurses have on the lives of their patients. “Today’s nominees were remembered because someone felt truly cared for,” she stated. “As we work to strengthen GMH for the future, know that you are not just part of the mission; you are the mission.” Dr. Aguon praised the nurses for their resilience and commitment during challenging times, noting that their small acts of kindness significantly affect patients and their families.
Among the 33 honored nurses, Danica Dianzon, a staff nurse in the intensive care unit (ICU), was recognized as the first-ever DAISY Award honoree. “I’m overwhelmed and grateful for everybody who helped me get this award,” Dianzon remarked. Having joined the ICU after graduating from the University of Guam in 2024, she has quickly gained admiration from peers for her positive attitude and dedication to patient care. “It takes the whole team. They have helped me grow and get here. Thank you,” she added.
Celebrating Nursing Excellence
The DAISY Award aims to cultivate a culture of gratitude within healthcare settings, enhancing the work environment and ultimately uplifting patient care. The 33 nurses recognized represent various departments across GMH, including the ICU, progressive care unit, radiology, and labor and delivery. GMHA stated that the initiative reflects its ongoing commitment to supporting and retaining its nursing workforce, which is vital to the hospital’s patient care mission.
During the ceremony, Governor Lou Leon Guerrero, who also has a nursing background, addressed the nominees, acknowledging both the triumphs and challenges they encounter daily. “Nursing is a calling that demands skill, compassion, and enormous heart, and each of you embodies those qualities every day,” she said. The Governor expressed gratitude for their unwavering care and support, highlighting the importance of their roles in the community.
Lt. Gov. Joshua Tenorio reinforced these sentiments, describing the work of nurses as “so special.” He stated, “It’s important that we recognize you for it. You care for our community in its most vulnerable moments, and you do it with grace, commitment, and humanity.” The celebration served as a powerful reminder of the vital contributions nurses make to both the hospital and the wider island community.
The DAISY Award ceremony is a testament to the dedication of nursing professionals in Guam. By honoring their achievements, GMHA aims to inspire continued excellence in healthcare delivery and foster a supportive environment for all healthcare workers.
